City’s strategic retreat stays home

Recycling gets simpler for city residents

Instead of an out-of-town retreat, the Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council will host its annual strategic planning retreat in the city in January, allowing residents to attend the meetings.

Historically, the weekend retreat is in Annapolis or Baltimore, which makes it difficult for residents to observe, said Acting City Manager James D. Arnoult.

Arnoult and city staff proposed that in addition to reviewing financial projections and the draft strategic plan, the Mayor and Council receive briefings from each department.

Retreat activities have been scheduled for the week of Jan. 14. In lieu of the regularly scheduled Mayor and Council work session at 7 p.m. Jan. 14, the council will receive results of the recent citizens’ survey followed by public comment on the strategic process.

The session at City Hall, located at 31. S. Summit Ave. in Gaithersburg will be televised by Gaithersburg City Cable on Channel 13.

On Jan. 17, the Mayor and Council will receive briefings from each department, a capital improvements project overview, discussion of a citizen survey completed this month and a review of the strategic plan.

The actual strategic planning retreat will begin at 9 a.m. Jan. 19.

The location for the Jan. 17 and Jan. 19 meetings has not been announced.

Residents may attend those two sessions, but there won’t be any public comment. The sessions will not be televised.

Recycling made simpler

Single-family home and townhouse residents in Gaithersburg can combine recyclable paper, plastic, glass, steel and aluminum materials in one container for waste collection.

A truck will deliver the materials to a waste management facility in Elkridge for automated sorting.

The change eliminates the need to separate newspapers from bottles and cans and frees up space in garages and curbside, said Britta Monaco, city spokeswoman.

Residents can put all recyclables in their green recycling bin on their next recycling day, Monaco said.
