Basketball: County PVAC rivals split doubleheader
Queen Anne boys victorious, but Grace Brethren rolls to win in girls' game
Queen Anne (8-1 overall, 5-1 in the PVAC) got 25 points from senior Edmond Wright and 22 points and 21 rebounds from junior Larry Haley to turn a 30-28 halftime deficit into a 47-40 lead after three quarters. The advantage grew to as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter. Lloyd Bramble and Miles Meadows each had nine points and Dean Bolt added five points for the Lions.
"If we had lost this game, we would have just been fighting for a playoff spot," said Queen Anne coach Dave Montgomery. "But now that we won and we only have one loss, we can be considered in the running for the top seed in the PVAC. It had been four years since we had beaten Grace Brethren. Even last year when we were 13-5 and they were 8-10, they still beat us twice. But at halftime I was very specific in what I said to them. We had to make free throws, minimize mistakes and box out on defense."
Grace Brethren (3-4, 2-3) led after one quarter, 15-13, and again at halftime, getting late second-chance points from Tyler Coburn at the end of the opening period and Daniel Loyd right before halftime. But the Eagles had difficulty containing Wright in the second half and the Lions outscored the visitors 19-10 in the third quarter and then 23-21 in the fourth period. Coburn hit a 3-point field goal at the buzzer to bring the deficit to single digits.
"We had trouble with [Haley] in the first half and then we could not stop [Wright] in the second half," said Grace Brethren coach Dennis Loufik. "Their No. 31 [Wright] basically won the game for them. We couldn't get anything going on offense and that's why our pressure defense didn't get to them. It was working in the fourth quarter, but we couldn't get anything going offensively."
Eagles fly past Queen Anne in girls' game
The Grace Brethren girls' basketball team vaulted to a 57-10 halftime advantage and then cruised to an 86-20 victory over Queen Anne Tuesday evening.
Grace Brethren (6-1 overall, 4-0 in the PVAC) got 20 points from Andrea Jones, 19 from seventh grader Lynee Belton, 16 more from Jade Scafe and 11 from Destiny Banks. The Eagles led 28-7 after one quarter and then outscored the hosts 29-3 in the second quarter.
"I'm proud of the way the girls played," said Grace Brethren coach Jeff Perry. "We did a lot of things well and we did not play down to the level of our competition. Thursday will be the big test for us when we go to Hebrew Academy. I'm not quite sure what they have this year, but I think that game will be a good measuring stick for us."
