Doctor honored for providing housing in Wheaton for disabled
Rockville resident Dr. Terrence Sheehan, chief medical officer of Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland, recently received the 2008 Rocky Stone Award. The award, given by the Archdiocese of Washington's Advisory Committee on Ministry to Persons with Disabilities, recognizes humanitarian efforts, leadership, advocacy and service to people with disabilities, according to a news release.
He was selected based on his work in a housing program for people with severe spinal cord injuries. The pilot program provided six disabled Montgomery County residents with a fully accessible unit at the new MetroPointe apartment complex located above the Wheaton Metro. Rent and in-home care support are subsidized by government and private agencies for the residents who began moving in November.
The pilot is the product of a shared vision among the members of the Adventist/Archdiocese Housing Workgroup, which Dr. Sheehan helped establish in 2003 and consists of members of the Washington Archdiocese and the Montgomery County Commission on People with Disabilities.

Company to develop pandemic influenza
training program
SimQuest, a developer of technology-assisted education and training, has received a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research contract award from the Office of the Secretary of Defense to develop a simulation-based planning and training tool for infectious disease outbreak — specifically pandemic influenza, according to a news release from the Silver Spring company.
The company will develop a software application with game design principles and technology that will allow medical treatment facility administrators and supervisors to understand the relationships that strategic planning and tactical decision-making have on the spread of disease.
In addition, the pandemic influenza training program SimQuest is developing is relevant to military training because domestic military support will likely be requested during a pandemic. Force preparedness is also a concern when considering more soldiers were killed by the flu outbreak in 1918 than in World War I in total, according to the release.
