Clarksburg edges Magruder late

The Coyotes' (2-0) pressure defense told all night and finally made the difference. They outscored the Colonels (0-2), 17-12, in the final quarter. Barron White and Domonique Boone split team-high honors with 14 points apiece.
For Magruder, Tim Harwood led all scorers with 29, on the heels of a 21-point outing in the Colonels' opening-night loss to Poolesville.
Good Counsel 78, Georgetown Prep 59
On Friday, Good Counsel got off to a slow start against Northwest before pulling away in the second half. The opposite held true in Tuesday's interdivisional private school clash, as the Falcons led the Little Hoyas at halftime, 51-24.
The Falcons were led offensively by Ben Hazel (22 points), Rodney Glasgow (20) and Devon Wright-Nelson (16). Markel Starks scored 21 for Prep.
Gaithersburg 56, Watkins Mill 53 (OT)
Tyvon Grant led all scorers with 16 points for Watkins Mill (0-2), but could not connect on a 3-point attempt that would have sent the game to a second overtime. The teams also went into the fourth quarter tied. Gaithersburg (2-0) was led by Tony Dorsey (14 points), Kris Westphall (12) and Malcolm Miller (11).
Springbrook 72, Walter Johnson 32
Springbrook opened its second straight Class 4A state title defense with its 37th straight victory. Demetrius Austin's 13 points led 13 Blue Devil scorers, as the Wildcats (0-2) did not have a single player in double figures.
Paint Branch 65, Whitman 60
The Panthers (1-1) led 21-11 after the first quarter but trailed, 30-29, at halftime. Rycourt Macauley (17 points) and Jeff Keane (16) led the way, as Charlie Waugh of Whitman (1-1) led all scorers with 24.
Blake 60, Poolesville 55
The Falcons' Kevin Baker hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 21 points, but Blake (2-0) made a 9-point halftime advantage stand up. Ryan Frazier hit three 3's of his own; he and Carlton Agwu led Blake with 13 points apiece. Poolesville falls to 1-1 on the season.
Richard Montgomery 61, Sherwood 43
The Rockets' Dominique Hansberry led all scorers with 18 points, as the Rockets improved to 2-0 in Sherwood's season opener. Brad Bolen led the Warriors with 12 points.
Quince Orchard 69, Rockville 47
The Cougars (1-1) bounced back from a tough opening-night loss, finally pulling away from a tenacious Rockville (0-1) team with 27 points in the fourth quarter. Rockville scored 22 points from the free throw line, and 11 different players scored. The Cougars' 10 scorers were led by Justin Corydon and Riley Seligmann, who had 14 each.
Northwood 81, Seneca Valley 51
The Gladiators (1-1) outscored the Screaming Eagles (1-1) in the second half, 45-20. Ed Dyson (16 points) led four Northwood players in double figures. Seneca's Mike Bullock led all scorers with 22.
Bullis 62, Riverdale Baptist 59
The Bulldogs held off a furious second-half comeback attempt to win their second game in as many tries this season. Three Bullis players reached double-figure points: Ryan Wright (17), Andre Hodo (17) and Joe Hazel (16).
Landon 55, Loyola-Blakefield 50
Danny Rubin (17.3 points per game) went 9 of 9 from the line and led the Bears with 23 points. Joe McDonald added 17 for Landon, which improved to 2-2 on the season.

Walter Johnson 54, Springbrook 40
Winless in 23 tries last season, the Wildcats are now 2 for 2 this winter under new head coach Tori Moten. A 22-point third quarter was the difference, as Walter Johnson placed four players in double figures: Catherine Madden, Sarah Howie and Sam Stadnik all scored 11 and Kristen Larrick had 10. Cheyenne Brown led all scorers with 15 in the Blue Devils' season-opening loss.
Gaithersburg 45, Watkins Mill 30
Leading by a single point entering the third quarter, Gaithersburg (2-0) outscored its local rival, 16-2, in the final 8 minutes. The Trojans' Kara Marshall (18 points) and Jasmine McRoy (17) of Watkins Mill (0-2) led their teams in scoring, as usual.
Kennedy 64, Blair 53
The Cavaliers' defense held the Blazers (1-1) to 8 third-quarter points to help create the decisive cushion. Kennedy (1-1) got 25 points from Sunny Conway-Flores and 21 from Alicia Hall, with 21 of their combined 46 coming from the free throw line. Johanna Lopez led Blair for the second straight game with 14 points.
Clarksburg 54, Magruder 43
Tia Johnson scored 25 points for Clarksburg (1-1), which led at halftime, 37-14. Anna Hackett added 15. Magruder (0-2) got 11 points from Amanda Witmer.
Quince Orchard 45, Rockville 27
Rockville's Meghann Tilghman (14 points) and Quince Orchard's Leah Dagen (12) were the only two players in double figures as the Cougars improved to 1-1 on the season and spoiled the Rams' season opener.
Seneca Valley 70, Northwood 23
Audrey Cunningham had 18 points, none from beyond the 3-point arc, to lead Seneca Valley (2-0). Kelsey Wolfe added 10 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Sarah Morgan and Janelle Silver scored 7 apiece to lead the Gladiators (0-2).
St. Andrew's 62, Montrose Christian 19
Nikki Azzara and Tiffany Webster led the way for the Lions (3-0) as usual, scoring 15 points apiece. The Independent School League newcomer has opened the season with three straight convincing wins, including back-to-back victories over former conference foes from the Potomac Valley Athletic Association.
Holton-Arms 51, Maret 39
The Panthers improved to 2-0 overall and in the ISL. Sequoia Austin (23 points) hit the upper 20s for the second time, and this time had plenty of help from Haley Jibert's 22-point night.
