County Council operating with misplaced priorities
Your Nov. 18 issue provided several examples of the misplaced focus of our county government leaders. First, the page one item stating that the [Montgomery County] Council somehow never got around to lifting the ban on early Christmas tree sales. They meant to, of course, and promised to deal with it, but oops, it slipped through the cracks.
Next up, on page A-19, we read about infighting on the council as it relates to who should become the next council president. Plenty of time for that, it seems. Then, on page A-22, we read that the council also has found the time to debate and then vote to impose nutrition data requirements on certain chain restaurants. Besides the obvious points that this is meddling in the affairs of private businesses and is a cost that we as consumers will bear if this is so important why not require all restaurants to begin this labeling? The answer, of course, is that this is simply a feel-good gesture and avoids offending restaurants owned locally by those who can vote.
Also on page A-23, we read that the master road and transit plan somehow hasn't been updated in over 50 years. Then there was [another] stunner, when it was revealed that much of our traffic system relies on 30-year-old computer equipment. No time to address that either, apparently. Wouldn't it be great if we had leadership that could stay focused, stick to local issues, and work in a more professional way to address these issues?
