Player of the Year

Amanda Carta

Making her second appearance on the Gazette-Star first team, St. Vincent Pallotti High’s goalkeeper delivered exceptional performances in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference playoffs. She capped her senior year by blanking McDonough in the championship game, two days after recording a shutout in the semifinal against John Carroll. All told, she had nine shutouts and 92 saves after posting 11 shutouts and 133 saves as a junior. Her performance during the IAAM playoffs has gotten her several offers from Division I colleges. She was selected to the all-conference team and Maryland all-state team.

Coach of the Year

Mike Vawter

Two years ago, Vawter earned Gazette-Star Coach of the Year honors for helping to put the Pallotti program on the map. This year, after losing several of last season’s top players to graduation, Vawter led the Panthers to the championship in one of the nation’s toughest leagues. IAAM rivals John Carroll and Archbishop Spalding are ranked regionally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

First Team

Mary McCarron, Elizabeth Seton: Making her first appearance on the first team, the senior played an integral role in helping the Roadrunners to a winning record (8-6-3) after years of being among the WCAC’s doormats. She was selected to the all-WCAC second team.

Kelliann Rooney, Elizabeth Seton: Making her second appearance on the Gazette-Star first team, the senior again commanded respect as one of the best sweepers in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. She became the first player in school history to be named to all-WCAC first team and did so in each of her final two seasons.

Ikumi Doucette, Eleanor Roosevelt: The junior sweeper anchored the best defensive unit in the county, helping the team to 14 shutouts in 16 games. Doucette occasionally moved up toward the front to display her scoring skills and netted eight goals, including the game-winner against Bowie during the league schedule.

Brittney Harris, Eleanor Roosevelt: The junior stopper helped lead a superb Raiders’ defensive unit. Blessed with a strong leg, Harris typically took all of the Roosevelt corner kicks and free kicks and scored one goal off a free kick in the Raiders’ 4A South Region victory against Bowie.

Brianna Hovington, Eleanor Roosevelt: On a team that focuses on defense, the sophomore was the Raiders’ primary offensive threat. She scored 23 goals in 12 games and netted five goals in the Raiders’ 6-0 victory against High Point in a 4A South Region semifinal contest. She’s described by coach Martin Pfister as the complete package, possessing speed, agility and superb passing, dribbling and shooting skills.

Sharde Estep, Gwynn Park: Blessed with a strong leg, Estep joins the first team for the first time after being on the second team last fall. The senior anchored the defense as the Yellow Jackets’ sweeper. A confirmed two-sport star at the Brandywine school, Estep has attained first-team status for softball as well. She was responsible for clearing more than 50 potential shots away from the net.

Kelsi Morris, Bowie: The talented senior midfielder is among the best all-around players in the region. Morris was among the team leaders with 14 goals and added 17 assists for the 13-2 Bulldogs who reached the 4A South Region final all four years that she was on the squad. Morris is headed to the University of Pittsburgh on a soccer scholarship.

Nikki D’Orsaneo, Bowie: The versatile senior would often start games on defense and move to the attack. Dependable on both ends of the field, D’Orsaneo led the Bulldogs with 23 goals and added nine assists. Making her second appearance on the first team, D’Orsaneo was also selected to the county senior all-star game and added one goal there. She scored 75 goals during her four seasons with the Bulldogs.

Patty Contic, Laurel: The versatile senior played nearly every minute of every game for the Spartans and tried every position except goalkeeper. She led the squad with 16 goals and added 19 assists. She was the team captain and most valuable player and often drew the attention of two or three defenders.

Moji Ogiefo, High Point: The senior emerged as the strongest goalie among the county’s public school squads, recording eight shutouts for the Eagles, who attained the third seed in the 4A South Region tournament. Ogiefo was responsible for keeping the Eagles in most of their games, recording more than 20 saves on four occasions, including a 0-0 tie against Oxon Hill and a 3-1 victory against Laurel.

Caitlin Rowland, Grace Brethren: The senior capped a superb career by scoring 23 goals and adding 11 assists for the 11-8-2 Eagles. She scored at least two goals in seven contests this fall, accounting for nearly half of the team’s goals. Rowland had 43 goals and 25 assists in her career.

Randall Marshall, Pallotti: One of the best defenders in the IAAM A Conference, the senior moved forward in the late stages of the playoffs and netted the game-winning goal in both the league semifinal and championship games. Ironically, Marshall had scored just one goal during the regular season.

Jazzmine Chandler, Pallotti: Twice selected to the Gazette-Star first team and the IAAM A conference all-star squad, Chandler commanded plenty of respect while controlling the center midfield for the Panthers. Her season totals of four goals and seven assists belie her importance to the Panthers this fall.
