Man shot, killed in New Carrollton; first city homicide since 2006
Body found at corner of Inlet and Jodie streets; police waiting to release victim's name
Prince George's County and New Carrollton police were on the scene of an early Friday morning shooting that left one man dead.
County and city police responded to a 911 call about 6:04 a.m. of a man down and arrived to find a man, approximately 30 years old, lying in a front yard at the corner of Inlet and Jodie streets in New Carrollton, said Capt. David Ladd of the New Carrollton police. The man was pronounced dead on the scene, Ladd said.
Police are waiting until his family is notified before releasing his name, Ladd said.
Ladd said he doesn't know how many shots were fired and police are not releasing where he was shot. Both streets are blocked off to traffic at the intersection, Ladd said.
The last homicide to occur in city limits was in January 2006 at 85th Avenue near Ellin Road, Ladd said. Specific details about the 2006 homicide were unavailable, he said.
New Carrollton resident Bob Simmons, who lives a half-block away on Jodie Street, said he awoke Friday morning to the sound of gunshots.
"I was in a fully deep sleep, and I heard a real loud noise," Simmons said. "Sort of half asleep I heard another one. Not in real rapid succession. By the third one I was fully awake."
Simmons said the shooting is out of character for the city and said the last nearby homicide he could remember was the April 2, 2008, stabbing death of Parkdale High student Guillermo Medina, 15, of New Carrollton.
"It's a terrible thing, another young man that lost his life," Simmons said.
