Quick Hits: Weekend Picks for Montgomery County
A one-man version of 'A Christmas Carol' in Gaithersburg; George Clooney is 'Up in the Air'
Bored with the season yet? Venues all over Montgomery County are hoping you're not. The weekend is full of holiday-themed events. Get used to it. Christmas is still three weeks away. Here's what's going on . . .
The real Scrooge: Actor Paul Morella has created his own one-man version of "A Christmas Carol." The inspiration? Charles Dickens' original novella. All the details and darker elements of the book are on display on stage at the Arts Barn in Gaithersburg. Get your humbug on tonight and Saturday at 8 p.m. or Sunday at 2 p.m.
A sing-along: At Montgomery College's Takoma Park/Silver Spring Performing Arts Center, Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer are presenting their 24th annual Winter Family Concert. The show starts at 1 p.m. Saturday and includes performances by the Rockville High School Pipe Band and fiddler Bonnie Rideout. Sing loud. You know the words.
Yes, Virginia, there is a musical: This is the last weekend to catch Potomac Theatre Company's staging of "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas." The musical version of "Miracle on 34th Street" closes its run with shows tonight and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Blair Family Center for the Arts in Potomac.
So it's not all about Christmas: Shakespeare is tough enough. But Shakespeare with actors as young as 8? It's possible at least in the hands of Lumina Studio Theatre. The company presents "The Merchant of Venice, CA." The show, as written by David Minton, takes place in 1950s Hollywood. Shylock and Co. hit the stage at 7 p.m. tonight with performances Saturday and Sunday.
Movies that don't involve an animated Jim Carey: Sure "A Christmas Carol" looks pretty good, but there's so much more out there. Try the dark love triangle of "Brothers" or the funny and poignant "Up in the Air." The George Clooney flick is landing near the top of many critics' top 10 lists.
