Knights boys still have last hurdle to clear
The Middletown boys basketball team is coming off of a 17-8 season that saw them make it all the way to the Class 2A West Region finals, but the Knights lost all five starters from that team to graduation.
"We may get off to a slow start because of our youth and inexperience," said head coach John Jarrett. "But these kids are working hard and we will get better during the season."
Jarrett expects three seniors to start this year. Six-foot-5 Morgan Winn and 6-7 Matt Collins will be the Knights starting front line. Jordan Hall (6-2) will be joined by two 5-11 juniors, Kevin Harris and Sam Glushakaw, in the back court. Chris Pirrone, a 6-0 sophomore, may see a lot of minutes off the bench.
Knights girls also chasing title dreams
The Middletown High girls basketball team went 20-5 last season, winning a share of the Piedmont title and making it to the West Region finals.
That team only went seven deep. This year, head coach Bill Miskell expects to have a much deeper bench this year.
"We can go 10 or 11 deep," said Miskell.
"Who plays each game is going to depend a lot on match-ups and who is playing well."
Three seniors are going to anchor the Knights roster. Kallie House, a 5-8 guard, and Alyssa Oursler, a 5-10 forward, are both returning starters. Oursler averaged over 12 points per game last season and was named first-team All-Gazette.
House averaged nine points per contest and earned honorable mention honors. Madeline Keimig, a 5-8 guard, was the first player off of the bench last year and is expected to slide into the starting line up.
Three sophomores, 6-2 center Chrissy Payne, 5-10 guard Brittany Holien, and 5-9 forward Jackie Kessler, will also be counted on for major minutes.
Seniors Emily Maerz (5-11), Ashley George (5-11), Danielle Robertson (6-0), and Hannah Holt (5-9) along with sophomore Allison Bussard (5-11) will also see playing time off the bench.
