Linganore boys basketball must be patient with football brethren
Gridders success wreaks havoc with Lancers' basketball
There are three different possible previews for the Linganore High boys basketball team the crew they'll have for the first game of the season, the contingent they'll have for the second game, and the squad that they'll have for January and on.
Right now, Lancers head coach Tom Kraft is once again a victim of his school's overall athletic success. With the football team getting ready to play in the Class 3A state championship at Baltimore's M&T Stadium on Saturday, Kraft won't have a full idea of what his roster is like until Monday at the earliest.
"I'm not liking it," Kraft said. "I'm happy for the football team, but I feel like I'm in limbo right now."
Currently, Kraft has nine guys on the roster that aren't on the football team. This includes two major returning starters in seniors Brandyn Wilkerson and Jeff Havenstein.
Wilkerson, a 5-foot-9 guard, is a four-year starter who averaged 10.6 points and 4.2 assists a game last year. Havenstein, a 6-7 forward, put in 9.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.5 blocks a game last year.
The Lancers will hold two more try-outs, with one scheduled on Monday. Tuesday is their first game of the season, when they host Damascus, and Wednesday is the final try-out.
For Tuesday's game, Kraft said he'll probably go with the line-up senior forward Danny Hennigan (6-0), senior guard David Feuz (5-11) and junior guard Matt Fratto (6-0).
Senior forward Kyle Ginsburg (6-5), junior guards Mike Wirtz (5-10) and Stephen Burke (5-7), and sophomore guard Luke Jackson (5-11) are also currently on the roster.
Kebetz and Buls are back for Linganore girls
The Linganore High girls basketball team returned two key starters in juniors Lexi Kebetz and Samantha Buls.
Kebetz, a 5-8 guard, averaged 9.7 points a game last year, while the All-Gazette honorable mention Buls, a 6-4 post player, scored 8.3 points last year.
Also back at point guard is the 5-5 senior Allison Eader, who dished out 3.3 assists a game last year. She's also the only senior on a young Lancers lineup.
Juniors Kelsea Ayers (5-6), Alissa Burch (5-5), Mariah Sprague (5-7) and Angela Scardapane (5-7) will bolster the backcourt along with sophomore Meghan Martin (5-6). Juniors Paige Eckard (5-8), Kaitlin Fleagle (5-8) and Anissa Hawkins (5-10) will fill in at the posts.
