Overcoming autism
Thank you for the excellent story about Eric Zimmerman and the organization he started, The Buddy Project, refurbishing old computers and getting them to others with learning challenges ("Technology enthusiast helps dozens," The Gazette, Nov. 26).
Eric's generosity is a great gift, but he is giving a much greater gift to the learning-challenged community than he may know.
Parents often think the diagnosis of autism is tantamount to a death sentence for their child's future. That does not have to be the case, and Eric is but one example of how that is true.
He is setting a positive example for others and giving families the one thing they need most of all hope. With the right educational and therapeutic support, as well as the guidance of a loving family and community, children with autism and other learning challenges can lead a happy and independent life.
Thank you, Eric, for sharing the gift of hope with all of us.
