Former Allman Brother will visit Frederick with new band
Fresh at the start of their eight-city East Coast tour, Dickey Betts & Great Southern will bring their classic southern rock to Frederick at 8 p.m. Friday at The Weinberg Center for the Arts, 20 W. Patrick St., Frederick.
Betts, best known as a founding member and former guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band, is credited with being one of the most influential guitar players of all time, because he mastered a seamless style of lyrical melody and rhythm marrying country, jazz, blues, and rock into one unparalleled sound.
After leaving the Allman Brothers, Betts formed his own band, Great Southern, which includes Betts' own son, Duane Betts on guitar, along with fellow guitarist Andy Aledort, bassist Pedro Arevalo, keyboardist Mike Kach, and drummers Frankie Lombardi and James Varnado.
Betts penned such memorable songs as "Ramblin' Man," "Revival," and the instrumental tour de force "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed."
Dickey Betts & Great Southern have honed their considerable musical skills through a touring schedule that has included live concert appearances with the Charlie Daniels Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Weir and Rat dog, and Phil Lesh & Friends.
The group released their first CD, "Let's Get Together," in June, 2001 mining such American music genres as jazz, western swing, country rock, blues, Celtic, and some good old rock n' roll.
A live DVD, "Live from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame," followed in 2005. A live CD entitled "The Official Bootleg" hit shelves a year later.
Tickets are $20 to $30.
