Brunswick boys attempt to regroup
Railroaders must replace five starters
Last season was one of the best in the long history of Brunswick High boys basketball.
Led by current Hood College freshman forward Justin Stone, the Railroaders posted a 19-6 overall record and advanced to the Class 1A West Region championship game.
Now with no returning starters, head coach Dan McLane and his young squad is hoping for another prosperous campaign.
Seniors Nathan Foltz and Derrick Aronhalt are accompanied by sophomore Ian Fisher the only Railroaders who recorded significant action last season. Foltz is a forward-guard listed at 6-foot-5. Aronhalt is a 5-11 guard while Fisher, listed at 6-6, will play center.
Though short on experience, Brunswick does boast six seniors and nine players over 6-foot. McLane is still sorting out his starting five.
"I like our length and athleticism but with our relative lack of experience our immediate goals are just to continue to try and improve," McLane said.
Brunswick girls work to improve
After struggling to a 3-20 record last season, Brunswick High's girls basketball team is looking to rebound during 2009-2010.
Head coach Gaylene Gardner welcomes back three starters. Senior guard Becca Pearrell (5-6) led the Railroaders with 8.2 points per game last year. Also returning is junior forward Brooke Price (5-7) and sophomore guard Megan Wilton (5-5).
Helping to round out the starting lineup is freshman point guard Dara Demich (5-6) and junior center Bianca Thomas, who is listed at 5-8.
Sophomore guard Ashley Axline (5-5) and 5-7 junior forward Brooke Hemp are Gardner's two primary contributors off the bench.
"I see a lot more team continuity that we've had in the past," Gardner said. "Our defense is much more aggressive than we've been and we're starting to flow on offense."
