Adelphi school honors Good Citizen' students
Cherokee Lane Elementary School in Adelphi selected eight students as its "Good Citizens" in October.
Each month, the school honors one exemplary student from each grade. October's winners were pre-kindergartner Brayan Matamoros-Martinez, kindergartner Evelyn Landaverry, first-grader Jessica Nguyen, second-grader Kayla Melendez, third-grader Michael Garcia, fourth-grader Shyanna Petters, fifth-grader Denia Canales and sixth-grader Leyda Orellana.
The students each received an award and had their photographs displayed in the school's main hallway.
Greenbelt Elementary announces honor roll

North Brentwood recognizes resident volunteers
North Brentwood's Town Council honored several residents and local leaders for their extensive volunteer work.
During the council's Nov. 16 meeting, Mattie Faircloth, Connie Alexander, Rose Holland and Emma Franklin were recognized for continued volunteer support of town activities.
In addition, Councilwoman Eleanor Traynham was given a lifetime achievement award. She is the past president of the North Brentwood Citizens Association and current treasurer. She also coordinates the town's Produce for Seniors program, serves on the board of the Prince George's African-American Museum and Cultural Center and is the security of the town's seniors' club.
The town also gave an award to Cheryl Derricotte, executive director of the Gateway Community Development Corp., for her work in the past year since she has been at the helm of the organization.
The Gateway CDC oversees and drives arts-related development in the Gateway Arts District, a two-mile stretch of the Route 1 corridor, which includes North Brentwood.
Public art unveiled in Hyattsville during apartment grand opening
The nonprofit Hyattsville Community Development Corp. and developer Post Properties held a juried sculpture competition, and the winning artist, Alan Binstock, unveiled his creation Nov. 17.
The competition was to create a public art installation on the property of Post Park, an apartment community in Hyattsville newly built by Post Properties. Binstock's "Pilgrim's Quandary" is on the pedestrian plaza at the intersection of East-West Highway and Toledo Terrace.
A capella singers from University of Maryland, College Park, PandemoniUM, as well as Northwestern High School's string quartet and Wildcat Marching Band, all performed during the grand opening celebration.
As part of the apartment's grand opening celebration, Post Properties also donated $25,000 to Northwestern High School for the purchase of new marching band uniforms.
Youth group helps celebrate 100 years of programs
The Camp Fire USA Patuxent Area council, a nonprofit based in Empirian Village that provides programs for youth, was awarded a crystal charter in honor of Camp Fire USA's centennial to be celebrated in 2010.
Patuxent Area Council was one of 50 councils nationally to receive a commemorative crystal Nov. 5 at the Camp Fire USA Biennial Business Meeting during their National Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Mo.
Rosemary Pezzuto CEO of Patuxent Area Council said the option for selecting councils to receive the award was left up to members of the national board who chose councils that were operating effectively. "We work very hard to deliver quality programs; we are very proud to have been recognized for our work," said Mary Ruth Sherren, president of the Patuxent Area Council Board.
Youth members Anastasia Wroblewski of Bowie and Alex Brown of Lanham accepted the award, which was etched with Camp Fire USA traditional symbols from National Chair Gwen Whitson.
Camp Fire USA will be celebrating 100 years and 30 million-plus hours of community service in 2010 with the lighting of National Centennial Campfires by councils throughout the country at the same time July 31.

King Middle salutes Renaissance Roll recipients
Twelve students at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Beltsville were named to the school's weekly Renaissance Roll on Nov. 13.
The Renaissance Roll program honors students who exhibit good citizenship and academic achievement. Each nominee is given a "Renaissance Living the Dream" card, which is then placed in a weekly drawing.
Prizes this week were pens, pencils, hats and pouches.
The winners were Jason Hernandez, Jesse Mason, Stephon Simmonds, Chrystal Wilson, Jeanaya Bertrand, Jorge Monge, Oluchi Otugo, Michelle Williams, Konyinsola Adesoye, Brandon Fokala, Aubria Owens and India Said.
County providing
H1N1 vaccinations
Prince George's County is providing H1N1 shots to all school children at their schools and to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention priority groups from 9 a.m. to noon every Thursday at the Cheverly Health Clinic at 3003 Hospital Drive in Cheverly. The program began Oct. 27 and will continue until further notice.
Priority groups include pregnant women, people who live with or care for infants under 6 months, health care and emergency medical services personnel, all people ages 6 months through 24 years, and people age 25 to 64 with medical conditions that put them at higher risk for influenza-related complications.

H1N1 vaccines are also being administered from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 3 and 10 at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex at 8001 Sheriff Road in Landover in the town hall meeting room.
At least 1,000 will be administered each day at the four clinics to people ages 6 months to 24 years, health care workers and pregnant women. The shots are free, and no proof of residency is required.

Holiday decoration
contest in University Park
The University Park Women's Club will sponsor the town's holiday home decoration contest Dec. 13 in University Park.
Judges will visit the town's homes from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded for best decorated door, best decorated house and best religious-themed decoration.
