South Carroll slips by Century, 10-6
Cavs' defense holds up against Knights' in rematch
The South Carroll High football team earned a tough come-from-behind, 10-6, win over visiting Century in Friday's Class 2A West Region semifinal.
Senior quarterback Alex Terpening's 1-yard sneak and classmate John Porter's extra-point kick gave the Cavaliers all the points it needed to advance to next week's West Region championship game against Middletown, who nipped host Rockville,14-7, in double overtime in Friday's other semifinal.
Porter also added a 23-yard field goal in the second quarter to give the hosts its eventual cushion.
"Last game [against Century] we were a little intimidated," Terpening said. "But this game we knew we could beat them and we took it to them in the first half. We really wanted this game."
South Carroll held on for the win despite committing 12 penalties for 105 yards.
On its third possession, Century's senior quarterback Josh Bordner (8 for 25, 175 yards, one TD, two interceptions) found senior receiver Anthony Cole wide open behind the Cavaliers' secondary. Cole (four catches, 109 yards) caught the pass in stride and bolted 76 yards for the score.
South Carroll senior tailback L.J. Costley (11 carries, 61 yards) broke off a 27-yard run on the Cavaliers final possession of the first quarter to set up Terpening's sneak.
"We thought we were a little more balanced, we had a lot of confidence in our running game and our passing game was on today," said South Carroll head coach Steve Luette.
"[Century was] a little more one dimensional, and we thought we could stop their running game if we could force them to use it."
The second half was played under worse conditions than the first, as the steady rain turned the field into a mud pit. As a result, both teams combined for nine second-half punts.
Century had one last chance with less than three minutes remaining and 80 yards to march for the game-winning score. On a pivotal third-down play, Cavaliers' defensive lineman Sam Wright dragged Bordner down for the game-clinching sack, his second of the night.
"We didn't let Bordner have any time [to pass], we sent the blitz and our corners and safety's did an amazing job," said Terpening.
"We knew we had to get pressure on Bordner, we wanted to keep him in the pocket and not let him scramble," said Luette.
Not only was South Carroll successful defending the pass for the majority of the game, but they also limited the Knights to just 66 rushing yards for the game.
Century finished the season at 7-4 under first year head coach Jim Holzman, while the Cavs' prepare for another set of KnightsMiddletown.
"We've been playing well on the road and we've been playing well on the road, but it's nice to not have to travel," said Luette.
