Three injured in Glenn Dale crash
Firefighters use Jaws of Life to pull teenagers from van
One teenager suffered life-threatening injuries and two others were hurt Thursday after their minivan rolled over and crashed in Glenn Dale, trapping them inside, Prince George's fire officials said.
The crash occurred around 2 p.m. at the intersection of Quarterhorse and Fletchertown roads, said Mark Brady, chief spokesman for the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department.
Firefighters used equipment known as the Jaws of Life, a heavy-duty, hydraulic tool, to remove the roof of the vehicle and to extricate the teens, a 17-year-old male, a 14-year-old female and a 19-year-old male.
Police were unable to confirm Thursday where the teens were heading, who was driving or who called 911.
The 17-year-old was found unconscious and suffered life-threatening injuries to his upper body; the other two teens suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries, including cuts, bruises and leg injuries, Brady said.
The teens were transported to two different trauma centers. The 14- and 19-year-old are expected to recover, Brady said, adding that the 17-year-old has "'hurdles to jump" in his recovery.
Nearly 40 firefighters and paramedics from the Bowie, Glenn Dale, Berwyn Heights, West Lanham Hills and Northview stations responded, Brady said.
The crash is under investigation, said Officer Evan Baxter, a spokesman for the Prince George's County Police Department. An accident reconstructionist has not been called.
The names and hometowns of the teens was not immediately available Thursday.
