MSD earns National Deaf crowns in football and volleyball for 2009
The Maryland School for the Deaf will raise two more banners after another successful fall.
Going 10-1 and dominating other deaf schools, the football team was named the 2009 National Champion by the Deafdigest.com for its seventh straight national championship, and eighth in the past nine years.
And the volleyball team went 37-5 for its fourth straight national championship, and seventh in the past nine years.
The Orioles have now won 50 national championships in 12 different sports.
For volleyball, MSD picked up three major tournament titles, winning the National Spike Out, Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association and New Life tournaments.
Football at MSD has gone 72-3 in the past seven years, buoyed by the team scoring 463 points this year and allowing only 97.
The Orioles had three different athletes get into end zone 10 or more times, including 12 touchdown catches from Shawn Harrington. Ethan Kramer ran for 15 touchdowns, while Todd Rewolinski 11 had touchdowns.
Todd Bonheyo also threw for 19 touchowns.
