Police investigating attempted carjacking outside Wal-Mart
Woman suffered minor injuries during attack
Anne Arundel County police are looking for a man who allegedly tried to carjack a woman outside a Wal-Mart on Thursday afternoon in Maryland City.
Police responded to the store, in the 5300 block of Russett Green East, at about 1:20 p.m. The woman, 67, said she was getting out of her vehicle when a man approached and demanded her keys, police said.
The man allegedly grabbed the woman around her neck and tried to get the keys from her hand, police said. The man was unarmed and fled on foot.
The woman suffered minor abrasions to her face and neck and refused treatment at the scene, said police spokesman Justin Mulcahy.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Metro Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
Tim Reyburn, president of the nearby Russett Community Association, said he has heard of previous altercations in the Wal-Mart parking lot and hopes the store will increase its security.
"You always have things popping up," Reyburn said. "It's a big shopping center."
Wal-Mart spokeswoman Ashley Hardie said the company prioritizes the safety and security of its customers but said she could not provide any details as to whether security will be enhanced at the Maryland City store.
Anne Arundel police are reminding residents to remain in their vehicles with their doors locked and windows closed if they see a stranger approaching and to avoid unoccupied vehicles if they see someone loitering.
