Gunman killed in botched robbery attempt
Fort Washington store manager shoots alleged intruder
An alleged robber is dead and another man remains at-large after a botched commercial robbery attempt Tuesday night in Fort Washington ended when the store manager shot the robber with the intruder's own gun, police said.
The robbery happened shortly before 9:30 p.m. at the Food Zone convenience store along the 12500 block of Livingston Road, according to the Prince George's County Police Department.
According to police, two men entered the store, and one produced a gun and attempted to rob the manager, who pulled the gun from the robber and shot him.
The second man fled the scene, police said. At least one customer was in the store at the time.
Cpl. Mike Rodriguez, a police spokesman, said Wednesday police continue to search for the suspect but could not provide a detailed description of the suspect or the identity of the man killed.
Rodriguez said police were unsure how the manager got the gun from the alleged robber.
On Wednesday, a Food Zone employee who declined to give his name identified the store manager as his brother and said the incident happened after "two bad guys came here."
Area residents said the store used to be a 7-Eleven until 2001, when it closed due to the high number of robberies. The Food Zone opened years later, with some of the same problems, said Jerry Mathis of Fort Washington, a community activist and candidate for the District 8 County Council seat in 2010.
