Bowie State men start season with loss
BSU women lose twice at tournament in Pennsylvania
The Darrell Brooks era at Bowie State University got off to a rough start when the men's basketball team dropped its opener, 87-73, to Mansfield (Pa.) University on Sunday.
Brooks was coaching in the first game at his alma mater and watched as the Mountaineers took an early 12-point lead in the first half. The Bulldogs used a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 31-28, but Mansfield pushed its lead back to 41-30 at the break.
The Bulldogs (0-1) cut the lead to six late in the second half, but would get no closer. The Mountaineers had four of their five starters score in double figures, led by Yusef Carr, who had 23 points.
Senior Duke Crews led the Bulldogs with 25 points. Andrew Engel was next with 14 points, while Armond Hill added 12 and Travis Hyman scored 11.
The Bulldogs return to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to Chowan University (N.C.). Bowie State plays its first home game on Nov. 28 when against Livingstone College.
Women fall in tournament
The Bowie State women's basketball team started its season by losing two games at the Clarion Tip-Off Classic at Clarion (Pa.) University.
The Bulldogs lost their first game to Gannon (Pa.) University, 65-60, on Sunday and dropped Monday's game to Clarion University, 73-50.
Junior Teaunsha Robinson led the Bulldogs in the first game with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow junior Lakisha Walker added 15 points, as Bowie State's second-half rally fell short.
Senior Bianca Lee was the only Bulldog in double figures with 11 during their loss to Clarion. Bowie State was never really in the game, as Clarion shot 54 percent from the field.
Bowie State's women's team will travel with the men's team to Chowan University on Saturday, where the women will have a 2 p.m. tipoff. The Bulldogs' home opener is Nov. 28 against Livingstone College.
