Cultural evolution

The Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company will take the stage of Montgomery College's Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts Center, 51 Mannakee St., Rockville, at 8 p.m. Friday. The company, led by artistic director Myroslav Vantukh, performs traditional Ukrainian folk dance in the spirit of founder Pavlo Virsky, who was committed to preserving and developing his culture's folk choreographic art. Turkey trek

A 50-foot helium balloon of Stewie dressed as Darth Vader will make its debut in the 12th annual Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade, which will kick off the holiday season at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Silver Spring. More than 100 parade units – floats, clowns on motorcycles, dance troupes, marching bands – will start at Sligo and Georgia avenues, proceed north on Georgia and turn right onto Ellsworth Drive. "Chasing Sparks," the Jeremy Kittel World Band's new CD, will be celebrated with an Institute of Musical Traditions concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Saint Mark Presbyterian Church, 10701 Old Georgetown Road, Rockville. Kittel, U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and a member of the Grammy Award-winning Turtle Island Quartet, plays with guitarist Kyle Sanna, percussionist Mathias Kunzli and cellist Nat Smith. Their music combines the "drive of Celtic fiddling, spontaneity of jazz, soul of bluegrass, layered melodies of Eastern Europe, intricacies of chamber music and rhythms of Africa and Latin America."
