Quick-strike Quince Orchard dismantles Tuscarora
Titans have no answer for Sasu in 3A West football semifinal
The top-seeded Quince Orchard football team was sound in all phases of the game Friday night in a 33-12 drubbing of No. 4 Tuscarora. But perhaps most important to head coach Dave Mencarini was the way his team responded to a Titans score late in the first half of the 3A West Region semifinal.
"In the playoffs, you never know when you're going to have to drive with less than a minute left," he said. "Teams that want to contend for championships respond; they bounce back; they're resilient."
The undefeated Cougar juggernaut has been riding its defense recently, but early on, it was the offense that made the plays for Quince Orchard (11-0). Senior Ben Sasu is still enjoying his first season as the featured back.
The first score of the game came on the Cougars' second possession, a 61-yard drive all courtesy of Sasu, culminating in a 39-yard burst through the middle of the line for a 7-0 lead.
"I can't say enough about my offensive line," Sasu said. "I get most of the interviews, but behind the scenes, they're the guys who really deserve everything."
He finished with 126 rushing yards in the first quarter alone and had three touchdowns for the game.
Tuscarora (7-4) showed flashes of brilliance during the regular season, including an upset of perennial power Urbana, 27-24, that earned it a place in the playoffs. After allowing the touchdown, the Titans bore down and forced straight two straight three-and-outs, effectively plugging the gaps up the middle, where Sasu was attacking.
But the Titans offense was unable to convert on the long fields; early on the best starting field position for Tuscarora was its own 27-yard line. One of those drives started on its own 7, and on third down a high snap went straight into the end zone and out of bounds for a safety and a 9-0 Cougars lead.
The stunned Titans gave up a long return on the free kick to Mitchell Carney, who took it to the Tuscarora 30. Four Sasu runs later, the Cougars took a commanding 16-0 lead, the score coming on a 13-yard scamper.
On the ensuing kick, a big return from Tuscarora standout Bobby Stup gave the Titans some hope, and the offense was able to use the momentum to get into the end zone. Quarterback Josh Marshall found Tyler Henry on fourth down with less than 1 minute left in the first half; Henry made a man miss and took it 11 yards down the sideline for the touchdown.
Quince Orchard took over with just 46 seconds on the clock and the ball at its 46-yard line. But it needed just 24 seconds to score.
Karim Jones was the first man not named Sasu to gain offensive yardage for Quince Orchard, with a 26-reception on third down. Two plays later, quarterback Drew Murphy's pass was hauled in beautifully by Carney, who was able to keep his balance while stumbling into the end zone.
After Sasu's third score early in the second half, his action was over for the evening. A Quince Orchard field goal and a 59-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Tuscarora's Matt Scott were the only scores of the second half.
The Cougars' win sets up a showdown Friday for the 3A West Region title with another unbeaten, second-seeded Linganore (11-0). The two teams are the top two in playoff points in the entire state.
"I'm excited," Sasu said. "This is supposed to be the big bad public school."
Added Mencarini: "We're where we want to be playing at home, but I'll celebrate the win tonight and worry about Linganore tomorrow."
