County has difficult day at cross country championships
Douglass senior provides highlight with second-place finish in Class 2A girls' race
Roberts finished second in the girls' Class 2A race, with a time of 20 minutes, 47 seconds on the hilly 5-kilometer course. She clocked the fastest time of the day among Prince George's County girls. Roberts, who finished 10th in last season's race, said this was her best race of the season.
"I'm so proud of myself right now," Roberts said. "I think that this year, I was just more mentally prepared for this course."
Johnson, battling a foot injury she sustained only days prior to the meet, took seventh in the girls' 4A race with a time of 20:53.
"I did better than I expected," Johnson said. "I injured [my foot] in practice on Tuesday but I didn't feel it until after the workout."
The Roosevelt boys had the highest finish of any county team, taking seventh place in the 4A standings. The Raiders were led by strong finishes from junior Charles Bolinger (15th/17:53), sophomore Justin Ahalt (28th/18:12) and junior Paul Yuan (32nd/18:19).
"I'm really proud of how we performed," Bolinger said. "I think we all did good given the conditions on the course."
Walter Johnson won the 4A boys' team title. Whitman senior Andrew Palmer took the individual title in 16:48.
Aside from the Roosevelt boys, no county team finished in the top 10, and some others found themselves just avoiding the cellar on a day when wet conditions made the already-tough course even more difficult.
The Roosevelt girls, who won three consecutive state 4A titles from 2004-2006, finished out of the top 10 for the first time since 2002, taking 16th place. Meanwhile, the Charles H. Flowers girls finished 17th. The only girls' 4A teams to finish behind the Jaguars and Raiders were Annapolis and Bowie.
Severna Park won the 4A girls' team title. Wootton senior Jessie Rubin took the individual title (19:48).
"It's a challenging course, but in the bad conditions, I'm overall pleased with how they did," said ?Flowers coach Tracee Gilchrist. "At this time of year, I'm always happy with them."
The Henry A. Wise boys' team finished last in the 4A race, taking 20th place and failing to have any of its runners finish in the top 100.
"I feel this was one of their worst races of the season," said Wise coach Tanya Poole. "I think since there was a lot of mud on the ground that slowed us down. The course is hard enough without it."
The Bowie boys also had difficulties, finishing 19th, but coach Richard Andrulonis took an optimistic approach to the day.
"I don't think this race was so much about time as positioning," Andrulonis said. "I think we were competitive in this race unlike some other years, and this was a nice way to end the season."
The Largo girls finished 19th in the 3A race, while the Fairmont Heights and Surrattsville boys finished 13th and 16th, respectively in the 1A race.
