Man killed in Secret Service crash identified
Temple Hills resident struck in Suitland Parkway intersection
U.S. Park Police have identified a man who was struck and killed Wednesday morning in Temple Hills by two Secret Service vehicles returning from a trip with the vice president.
Larry D. Moore, 53, of Temple Hills was struck shortly before 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Suitland Parkway and Naylor Road, U.S. Park Police said. Moore was walking in the intersection when he was struck by two vehicles, a limousine and a sport utility vehicle, traveling in the westbound lane, said Sgt. David Schlosser, a Park Police spokesman.
The vehicles had just left Joint Base Andrews and were traveling to a Secret Service garage in Washington, D.C., said Ed Donovan, a spokesman for Secret Service.
Donovan said the vehicles were armored and had been used to transport Vice President Joe Biden while he was on a trip in Fort Lewis, Wash.
Biden was not in either vehicle at the time. Only the drivers were inside the cars at the time of the crash, Donovan said, adding they are not agents for Secret Service. Both drivers had completed a required drivers course to operate the vehicles, he said.
"The vehicles were operated by Secret Service personnel," he said. "Our employees and vehicles stayed at the scene until Park Police finished the investigation."
The crash is being investigated by Park Police and the Secret Service.
Schlosser said determining the cause of the crash could take up to a month.
"This is going to be a long-term investigation," he said. "These things don't happen overnight."
