Boys soccer: Bowie to play for state championship
Bulldogs earn 1-0 win, prepare to face Perry Hall in title game
Bowie (17-0) will meet Perry Hall High in the 4A championship game. The state soccer finals are scheduled for Nov. 13-15 at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County in Catonsville. Exact game times and dates were not available Saturday night.
Bulldogs' sweeper Daniel Walker and goalie Curtis Fisher helped Thornton’s second-half goal stand with a series of stellar defensive plays late in the contest. Bowie was making a state semifinal appearance for the third straight year, and after setbacks in 2006 and 2007, the third time proved to be the charm for the Bulldogs.
"I’m really happy for the boys," said Bowie coach Richard Kirkland. "They’re 17-0 and now they’re only one of two teams left playing for the 4A state title. That’s quite an accomplishment. They’ve been able to do what few teams have ever done. I was starting to get a little concerned in the second half because Severna Park used their subs quite frequently and we stayed primarily with our starters. That’s why I was really hoping we could avoid going into overtime."
Bowie took more than a dozen shots in a scoreless first half and watched Severna Park keeper Pete Koffler stop nine of them while several others were just off target. But in the early stages of the second half the Bulldogs got on the board as junior forward Brian Graham beat his defender down the sideline and sent a crisp centering pass to Thornton. The junior's low shot deflected off Koffler and into the right corner of the net.
"Brian made a great play to get to the ball and he sent it back to me and I was able to get it through the keeper’s legs," Thornton said. "Daniel made some great defensive plays in the back for us. He’s like a brick wall back there. Curtis made some unbelievable saves. There were some shots that I thought were going in, but he was able to get to them. We’re definitely excited to be going to the state championship game. We’re motivated and we’re going to win it."
Graham, as he has done all season, gave defenders trouble with his quickness, agility and dribbling skills, and he nearly added an insurance goal with less than two minutes remaining only to watch his shot beat Koffler then carom off the right post.
"Josh [Patterson] fed me the ball and I just wanted to stay onsides and get past my defender and then wait for Patrick to call for the ball," Graham said of the goal. "When I got to the end line I sent the ball back to the middle and Patrick made a great shot to score. When I had a chance to score late I turned as I shot the ball and the crowd went silent and the only sound I heard was the ball ping off the post. I should have followed it in. Curtis made some unbelievable saves. He’s like a cat back there."
Earlier in the week, both Graham and Patterson were named to the Maryland Association of Coaches of Soccer all-state first team, while Walker took home second-team honors and Fisher was given honorable mention.
