Good night for jazz at Strathmore; Gallery Neptune exhibit fuses art, fashion
Every night is a good night for jazz, but tonight is extra special. Dee Dee Bridgewater, a Grammy and Tony award winner, is paying tribute to Billie Holiday at Strathmore at 8 p.m. The show is an extension of the play "Lady Day," which Bridgewater first performed in Paris 23 years ago. She refuses to impersonate Holiday, opting to croon standards like "Fine and Mellow" with the voice that has kept her career going for more than three decades . . . Blair Mansion in Silver Spring offers fine entertainment tonight as well. Former Platters frontman Joe Coleman will run through soul favorites and throw in some funk for good measure. The show begins at 8 p.m. . . . At Gallery Neptune in Bethesda, art and fashion collide with the work of two local women who have an eye for 3D design. Joyce Zipperer makes high heel shoes out of aluminum and other metals. Some of her designs are nearly wearable. Others barely resemble footwear at all. Elsewhere in the space, Rania Hassan has turned a family tradition of knitting into a clever mixed media series. Her pieces start with oil paintings of hands and give way to actual knitted fibers that connect to another set of painted hands. The gallery is open Saturday and Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. . . . At the movies, George Clooney channels his inner Jedi for the military comedy "The Men Who Stare at Goats." And yes, with Halloween behind us, it's time to start rolling out the holiday-themed entertainment. Disney's animated reworking of "A Christmas Carol" stars Jim Carey as Scrooge.
