Quick Hits: Weekend picks for Frederick County
Jazz, Finnish circus troupes, and the holidays hit downtown Frederick
The Weinberg Center will light up with unusual sights and unique, new sounds this weekend, beginning tonight with The Todd Marcus Orchestra and "An Evening of Jazz." The Baltimore-based, nine-member orchestra will be accompanied by two special guests, trumpeter Sean Jones, of New York, and pianist Orrin Evans, of Philadelphia. The concert, featuring Marcus' original compositions and arrangements, is being held as part of a grant from The Maryland State Arts Council, and will be preceded by a rehearsal session open to the public.
Finnish circus phenomenon Circus Aereo will visit The Weinberg on Saturday as part of its premiere U.S. tour with the gravity-defying program known as "Espresso." Renowned throughout Europe, the troupe combines cabaret, movement and music into a high-speed and humorous tale for all audiences. A free juggling workshop will be held in advance of the evening performance at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
Ho ho ho The Downtown Frederick Partnership will celebrate the beginning of the holiday season with a special First Saturday open house event from 5-9 p.m., featuring free carriage rides, hot cocoa, and live musical performances. And for that person who has everything? A limited-edition, illuminated Downtown Frederick Partnership snow globe celebrating the organization's 20th anniversary will be available for purchase.
