Gaithersburg election results certified
Incumbents Katz, Marraffa, Sesma are official winners
Gaithersburg's Board of Supervisors of Elections officially certified municipal elections results Wednesday, reporting a landslide victory for incumbent Mayor Sidney A. Katz, who received 72 percent of the votes in his race against opponent Richard Koch.
Katz, and incumbent City Councilmen Henry F. Marraffa Jr. and Michael A. Sesma will be sworn in Monday at City Hall to serve another four years.
Tuesday's elections brought Gaithersburg's highest turnout ever, said city spokeswoman Britta Monaco.
After taking absentee ballots and authorized provisional ballots into account, the city's election board reported 3,631 ballots cast and an official voter turnout of nearly 13 percent.
According to official results, Katz received 2,623 votes or 72 percent, while Koch, a regional real estate developer, received 988 votes or 27 percent.
Marraffa and Sesma received 2,285 votes and 2,581 votes respectively in the race for City Council, while Tom Rowse, a Deer Park resident and newcomer to city politics, received 1,400 votes, a showing that made him proud, Rowse said. He called the elections a learning experience and said he plans to run again.
Koch said Tuesday evening at City Hall that he was undecided about running again.
