Movies: New on DVD
Here are some of the DVDs scheduled to be released Tuesday:
Up: Pixar/Disney has another hit, and this is a film adults can love as much as the children do. For an animated movie, it deals with some heavy subjects, such as the death of a partner and life slipping away with goals still unfulfilled. Carl Fredericksen is 78 and has lost the love of his life, while the city is trying to take his home from him for a new development. So with the help of an 8-year-old, he sets off (literally) on the adventure of his life.
PG; 89 minutes; Directed by Pete Docter and Bob Peterson
The Ugly Truth: At some point, Hollywood will tire of the predictable romantic comedy plot and try something new but not quite yet. In this one, Katherine Heigl plays a television morning show host who has trouble with her own love life. Her bosses pair her with a new, annoying co-host, played by Gerard Butler, who promises to reveal all the dirt on what makes men and women tick. Is there anyone who doesn't see how this one will end?
R; 95 minutes; Directed by Robert Luketic
The Merry Gentleman: A woman who is fleeing an abusive relationship with a policeman moves to a new city. Soon, she starts an unlikely friendship with a depressed hitman. Both are damaged and look to each other for healing, but soon their pasts catch up with them.
R; 99 minutes; Directed by Michael Keaton
Spread: Ashton Kutcher stars as a young man who uses his good looks and sexual abilities to skate through life. Rich women desire him, showering him with gifts and access to famous people. But one night he meets a woman his own age who plays the same sexual games he does. Can the two of them quit being players and settle for love?
R; 87 minutes; Directed by David Mackenzie
