Surrattsville boys soccer team rolls into regional semifinals
Hornets get set to host Pikesville on Friday
The Surrattsville High School boys' soccer team has just 12 players on the roster, but Hornets' coach Richard Hensel has stressed conditioning this fall. That emphasis has paid off, as Surrattsville rolled to a 5-0 victory against Baltimore's Carver High in the quarterfinals of the 1A South Region playoffs on Tuesday.
Surrattsville will play host to Pikesville at 3 p.m. Friday in a regional semifinal. Pikesville beat Forestville,
7-0, on Tuesday.
"We have no bench and just 12 guys, we've made it through the season, and we've had no injuries," Hensel said. "It's been a miracle. We train hard, so the games feel like practices to us. We run a mile as a warmup, and then we practice."
Justin Maldonado had two goals and an assist, Orel Downie added a goal and three assists and Abdul Mamoud scored twice for Surrattsville, which improved to 8-3-1. Michael Alvarez added an assist and goalkeeper Stephan Pennix made five saves to register the shutout. Surrattsville did all of its scoring in the first half.
"The guys came out strong," Hensel said. "We didn't' know what to expect. We were playing a team in the beginning stages of their program. They played hard. Once we hit 5-0, we don't want to embarrass anyone. The guys understand that. We've been on the other end of getting killed, and we don't play like that.
