Top-seeded Bowie advances to region semifinals; Parkdale knocks out No. 3 seed Flowers
Top-seeded Bowie (13-1) has not lost since a Sept. 8 defeat at Arundel High. The Bulldogs will play host to Henry A. Wise (9-4) in the 4A South semifinals at 3 p.m. Friday. Parkdale (6-7-1) will visit Eleanor Roosevelt (10-1) at 3 p.m. Friday in the other regional semifinal. Bowie coach Aaron Hankey said Oxon Hill's performance led to a relatively close game, given his team's 10-0 win against the Clippers in a Sept. 22 regular season game.
"I would say the biggest difference between this one and the first game was that [Oxon Hill] came out hard and they were very aggressive," Hankey said. "They played a solid game."
Sims and senior Mary Randolph tallied first-half goals, and Sims added two more in the second half. Sims, Kristi Hepner, Erika Monroe and Alison Ryan each had assists. The Bulldogs pounded Oxon Hill with 24 shots, 14 on goal, but Hankey said there was room for improvement. "A few things need to be tweaked," he said. "For starters, we needed to have a better first touch on the ball. They have to understand to take these playoffs one game at a time because if you lose one, you're out."
Elsewhere on Tuesday, Parkdale got two goals from Karen Salmeron to upset third-seeded Charles H. Flowers, 2-1.
The Panthers broke a 1-1 tie with 15 minutes remaining when Salmeron scored her second goal of the day. Parkdale withstood a late Jaguars' surge to notch its fourth consecutive win and the right to face Roosevelt in the region semifinal. The Raiders defeated Northwestern, 5-0, on Tuesday.
"Basically we got both of our goals the same way," said Parkdale coach Malka Ostchega. "Zulia [Menjivar] fed the ball to Lulu [Lurona Alexander], who passed it to Karen and she was able to score. The girls are really playing well. Lesley Rosalez has played really well in goal. I'm looking forward to playing Roosevelt. Anytime you get a chance to play Roosevelt in the region semifinals, it's something to look forward to."
Wise advanced to the semifinals with an 8-0 win against Bladensburg. Tracee Morgan scored four times and had an assist for the Pumas, while Christen Blair added three goals and three assists. Lauren Robertson had a goal and an assist.
