Montgomery Blair High to stage Macbeth'
The Montgomery Blair High School production of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and Nov. 11, 12 and 13 in the school auditorium, 51 University Blvd. East, Silver Spring. There will also be matinee performances 2 p.m. Thursday and Nov. 13. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens they can be purchased at the school attendance office or reserved by emailing megan@mscribner.com.
News from Kennedy High
Cecile Maurelli, a senior at John F. Kennedy High School in Silver Spring, was selected as one of the winners of the National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing. The competition allows schools to nominate three outstanding juniors per year to enter timed writing samples on prompts given by the selection committee. Cecile was selected as one of a short list of state winners from among 1,641 nominated juniors.
Timothy Rodman, AP Government and Economics teacher, received the Secondary Social Studies Educator of the Year award from the Maryland Council for Social Studies. Rodman is a third-year teacher at Kennedy.
Honor the past at Paint Branch

Red Ribbon safety
Spencerville Adventist Academy celebrated Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 18 through 22, with students from grades 6 through 12 learning about the consequences of drug and alcohol use and the importance of healthy living and younger students working on ways to "be a buddy, not a bully." On Oct. 20, Susan Shah-Blake from Mothers Against Drunk Driving spoke to the students, reminding them to think about the impact of their decisions.

in national competition
Ten Montgomery County Public Schools students have been named regional finalists or semifinalists in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology.
James Pinkerton and Rafael Setra, both from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, were named regional finalists. They will compete again in November for a chance to move to the national finals in Washington, D.C., in early December.
Eight other students, Andrew Das Sarma, Shilpa Kannan, Nilay Kumar and Winston Liu from Montgomery Blair; Annie Lin and Tingrui Zhao from Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda; and Raja Ratna Ayyagari and Lucienne Park from Poolesville High School were named semifinalists.
The Siemens Competition is held to highlight outstanding high school students in the areas of science, mathematics and technology. This year, 2,033 students registered to enter the competition, with a total of 1,372 projects submitted. Nationally, 312 students were named semifinalists and 94 were named regional finalists.
Students are vying for college scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $100,000, in individual and team categories. For more information visit www.siemens-foundation.org.
Hispanic College Fair
and Parent Night
More than 60 colleges, universities and vocational schools will be represented at the National Hispanic College Fair on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at The Universities at Shady Grove Conference Center, 9630 Gudelsky Drive, Rockville.
High school juniors and seniors and their parents are invited to the event.

Pennies for Patients

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's School & Youth Program, Pennies for Patients, is accepting registration from schools willing to participate in the annual fundraising campaign.
The organization is seeking 400 schools to participate in the 2010 Pennies for Patients program and help raise $450,000 for those battling blood cancers. Wood Acres Elementary School in Bethesda was the top fundraising elementary school in 2009, collecting $6,555.42. The school has signed on to participate this year. Overall, 242 schools raised more than $400,000 for the National Capital Area Chapter in 2009.
The three-week program takes place in schools throughout the nation in February or March, with students collecting spare change in honor of a local student survivor or current patient.
