SUV hits, kills Fort Washington woman in Glenn Dale
Elderly driver was backing up in parking lot of supermarket; charges pending
A Fort Washington woman died Monday after she was struck by a sport utility vehicle that was backing up in the parking lot of a Shoppers Food Warehouse in Glenn Dale, said fire and police officials.
Around 1:30 p.m., Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department responders arrived at the Vista Gardens Marketplace shopping center parking lot near the intersection of Annapolis Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Highway for a report of a woman trapped under a Ford Explorer, said Mark Brady, a department spokesman.
Karen Prince, 55, of Fort Washington was underneath the SUV, and when responders arrived she was not breathing and had no pulse, Brady said. Responders administered CPR and transported Price to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Charges are pending against the driver of the SUV, a 77-year-old Lanham woman who was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, said Cpl. Mike Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Prince George's County Police Department.
It is not yet clear how fast the SUV was backing up or why the driver didn't see Price, Rodriguez said. The crash remains under investigation.
