Laurel shakes off rough first half
Standout striker Levia scores twice for Spartans, but suffers arm injury
Laurel (8-4) broke a scoreless tie in the game's 40th minute when senior forward Jose Leiva scored from short range after Oxon Hill goalkeeper Nick Valcin failed to properly clear the ball with only 13 seconds remaining the first half.
Leiva scored again in the second half in the game's 61st minute. Leiva a 2008 Gazette-Star All-County First Team selection after scoring 14 goals last season left the game several minutes later after a collision with Valcin. Leiva injured his right arm and is questionable for Laurel's quarterfinal game at third-seeded Eleanor Roosevelt at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
"If I know Jose, he will play on Tuesday," Ferguson said, adding that Leiva could not flex his arm below the elbow and will have the arm X-rayed. "I was disappointed with how we played in the first half. I think our guys were already thinking ahead to the game against Eleanor Roosevelt. That will be a tough challenge. I think the midfield has to step up if we want to win."
The Clippers, meanwhile, had a tough season conclude at 2-12. Oxon Hill got its lone goal in the 66th minute when Bryan Chura scored on a rebound.
But the Spartans put the game out of reach in the 77th minute when senior captain Benson Amponsem scored after a corner kick from Jorge Carranza.
