Gaithersburg, Blair, Northwood, QO, Einstein, Poolesville all winners Friday
The Gaithersburg football team won its second straight game and moved within a game of finishing the season .500 with an overwhelming win over Northwest.
Gaithersburg (4-5 overall, 3-2 Montgomery 4A East Division) rolled up 404 yards of offense and forced four Jaguar turnovers, including sophomore Simba Gwashavanhu's seventh interception of the season. Tyler Lardy rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns, and Khare Cross added 123 yards and one score on the ground.
Zack Fetters threw for 112 yards and found Sylvester Oni for a touchdown. The win was Gaithersburg's first ever against Northwest, which opened in 1998.
Poolesville 32, Wheaton 30
Tyler Holston threw for 247 yards and 3 touchdowns, including a 19-yarder to Ben Weber with under 2 minutes remaining, to give the Falcons (2-7 overall, 1-1 2A Division) their second victory of the season.
Weber caught two fourth-quarter scores as Poolesville erased an early 14-point deficit. Holston also found wideout Ben Hessels for a 56-yard touchdown late in the first quarter.
Halfback Rayshawn Taylor had a monster game for the Knights (3-6, 0-2), rushing for 201 yards, 3 touchdowns and a pair of 2-point conversions. His backup, Phil Deke, rushed for 67 yards and a score, while quarterback Ricardo McLeod added 83 more on the ground.
Einstein 26, Watkins Mill 13
Senior halfback Karim Willis rushed for 221 yards and a touchdown and cornerback Alante Rhoden returned a late interception 30 yards for another to snap the Titans' (5-4 overall, 3-4 Montgomery 3A Division) two-game losing streak.
Watkins Mill (1-8, 0-6), which trailed from start to finish, cut Einstein's lead to six on senior Fola Akinnibi's 81-yard touchdown catch. Akinnibi also accounted for the Wolverines' other score, an 83-yard kickoff return in the second quarter.
Quince Orchard 41, Blake 7
Ben Sasu rushed for 176 yards and a touchdown and Drew Murphy (7 of 9, 138 yards) tossed three scores as the No. 1 Cougars (9-0 overall, 7-0 3A Division) breezed to their ninth straight win.
Sasu, who now has 1,127 yards on the ground, broke the game open with a 43-yard scoring jaunt in the third quarter. Quince Orchard added 20 insurance points in the fourth, courtesy of a Jason Bishop 4-yard run and two Murphy passes, a 6-yarder to Karim Jones and a 25-yarder to Harry Long. Electric senior wideout Pernell Brantley caught his seventh touchdown pass of the year, a 52-yarder, in the second quarter.
Halfback Brandon Simms accounted for the only Blake (3-6, 3-4) touchdown, a 5-yard run in the second quarter.
Northwood 44, Kennedy 8
Quarterback Jimmy Hessler went off, to the tune of 337 yards and 5 touchdowns, as the Gladiators (3-6 overall, 2-5 Montgomery 3A Division) moved ahead of the Cavaliers (2-7, 2-5) in the standings on the basis of overall record.
Hessler completed 22 of 30 passes and found five different receivers for his five scores. Gary Vaughn led the way with 129 yards on six catches. Anatoly Moschkin also caught six balls, for 70 yards.
Bisi Ezekoye scored Kennedy's touchdown on a 42-yard run in the first quarter.
