Good Counsel looks playoff-ready
Brown scores three times in 37-7 defeat of Gonzaga
The Falcons scored on each of their first three possessions, while sophomore tailback Wes Brown totaled 150 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns to in a 37-7 victory over visiting Gonzaga.
The win kept the Falcons (8-1 overall, 5-1 conference) in stride with Washington Catholic Athletic Conference front-runner DeMatha (8-0) and Bishop McNamara (7-1) as the regular season draws to a close next week.
"We still have a lot of work to do between now and then," Good Counsel coach Bob Milloy said. "We're certainly happy to be 8-1, but we have to continue to improve week to week if we're going to get to where we want to go."
For much of the first quarter, the Falcons played like they were already there. Blake Countess took the opening kickoff and weaved through Gonzaga defenders for 49 yards. On the next play, 21 seconds into the game, Brown burst through the line and sprinted 41 yards for a touchdown.
After forcing the Eagles (5-4) to punt, Good Counsel again went to Brown, who wrapped up a six-play, 56-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run 5 minutes later.
"I saw how the linebackers were lining up and I told my fullback [Mike Nittoli], I got this one,'" Brown said. "And he cleared the way and the offensive line made all the right blocks. It's always a good thing when you can get off to a start like that."
Gonzaga fumbled on its next possession, and Frank Tamakloe scooped it up to give Good Counsel the ball back near midfield. On the next play, junior quarterback Zach Dancel hit E.J. Scott on a 48-yard touchdown pass, giving the Falcons a 21-0 lead.
For good measure, after the Eagles finally got in scoring range, Good Counsel linebacker A.J. Bowman blocked a field-goal attempt.
"We just gave up three big plays," Gonzaga coach Joe Reyda said. "You can't give this team a 21-point head start and expect to come back. We came out flat and they got the momentum, but after that, it was a pretty good ballgame."
The Eagles kept their composure enough to drive to the Falcons' 25-yard line at the end of the first half, and even found the end zone when sophomore Demetrius McNeil scored on a 4-yard run 3 minutes into the third quarter.
But Good Counsel was just too much. The Falcons answered Gonzaga's only score with a 13-play, 74-yard drive led by Brown, who struck the dagger with his third touchdown run.
Gonzaga junior quarterback Joe Battista filled in for injured starter Kevin Hogan, tossing for 190 yards. Dancel completed 8 of 14 passes for 119 yards.
