Laid off school workers may get year's pay
A potential agreement between the Prince George's County schools' superintendent and county administrative union could allow about 50 school system employees whose jobs changed because of layoffs to receive their former salaries for one year because they were not notified by the time specified in their union contract, a union representative said Monday.
Of the more than 150 school system positions, including 34 assistant principal jobs, eliminated this year because of budgetary restrictions, about 50 employees were notified of the elimination of their position after July 1, said Doris Reed, the executive director of the Association of Supervisory and Administrative School Personnel, the union that represents principals and assistant principals of Prince George's County public schools.
"By Maryland law, they had to be notified by June 30," she said.
School officials did not say by press time why employees were notified at different times.
Superintendent William Hite Jr. agreed late last week to pay the laid-off employees their full salaries this year, according to Reed.
School spokesman MosesAlexander Greene described the arrangement as a potential agreement Monday but said details were not immediately available.
"The Administration is reviewing the number of positions potentially involved and evaluating costs associated with a potential agreement," Greene said Monday in an e-mail to The Gazette. "To date, there is no written agreement, but we will be working with ASASP to explore options for final resolution."
