Brunswick girls soccer finishes on high note
Railroaders trounce Rebels, 6-0 to end regular season
The Brunswick High girls soccer team closed out the regular season in style Monday evening.
Delivering their best game of the year, the Railroaders rolled over South Hagerstown High 6-0 in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League non-conference match.
"Everything came together," Brunswick head coach Dave Herber said. "We finished our chances. We've been building towards this and it all came together today."
Senior midfield captain Lacey Martin led the charge, tallying a pair of goals and three assists. In what may have been her final home appearance, Martin set school records for assists in a season (nine) and career (14).
"It's pretty cool," Martin said of her records.
Freshman striker Dara Demich also added her name to the Railroaders' record book. Knocking in Brunswick's first two scores, she established a new single season benchmark for goals with 15.
Brunswick (4-10) spent the majority of the contest on South Hagerstown's side of the field. Unleashing 22 shots, the Railroaders also got scores from junior striker Alison Mader and senior striker Kaitlyn Stepler.
Anchored senior fullback Molly Newton, as well as junior fullbacks Jordyn Hutchins and Jill Fawley and junior goalkeeper Courtney Swaim, the Railroaders defense severely hindered the Rebels' attack, allowing only six shots. Swaim finished with six saves, including an acrobatic diving effort early in the second half.
"They've been building towards this all year," Herber said. "It's nice to see everything come together."
Drawing the fifth seed, the Railroaders were awarded a first-round bye and will start the Class 1A North Region playoffs at Harford County's Patterson Mill High on Nov. 3.
The No. 4 Huskies are 4-4-3 and haven't won since the middle of September.
"This win gives us a lot of confidence going into the playoffs," Martin said.
"We're starting to finish off goals, so we feel a lot better about ourselves because we're scoring."
South Hagerstown finished the regular season with a 1-11 overall mark.
