Police investigate burglary, sexual assault at deaf school
Frederick police are investigating this week a burglary and a sexual assault reported at the Maryland School for the Deaf in Frederick.
On Tuesday, police said they received a report of an alleged sexual assault of a male student, believed to have taken place in a school dormitory. The victim was treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital and is in good condition, according to a police release.
The reported assault came just days after police said suspects broke into the school's Career and Technology Building on South Carroll Street, at about 8 a.m., Sunday. Several offices and classrooms were ransacked; money was stolen and property was destroyed.
Suspects also stole a 1995 GMC sport utility vehicle belonging to a staff member.
Anyone with information about either incident can call the Frederick Police Department at 301-600-2100 or the TIPS line at 301-600-8477. Tips can also be texted to 240-674-8477 or e-mailed to fpdcrimetip@fredco-md.net.
City adds another property to annexation queue
Frederick city officials raised no concerns last week about the 10th and final property to be annexed into the city before the end of the current administration.
On Oct. 21, the mayor and Board of Aldermen examined plans for annexing the 62.3-acre Sanner property located near Christopher's Crossing and Walter Martz Road. The property is already owned by the city, and will be zoned R-4, with potential to host 192 homes.
The property is intended to complete the Christopher's Crossing project, bound by Clover Ridge to the east and Clover Hill 3 to the west. The city will also offer Frederick County 3 acres of the property for a potential fire station site.
The Sanner annexation, along with a 52-acre site on the city's eastern gateway, is scheduled for a vote at a Nov. 5 city meeting.
Residents encouraged to Get it Downtown'
The Downtown Frederick Partnership is encouraging city residents to participate in the "Get It Downtown" Challenge week during the first week of November.
From Nov. 2 to Nov. 7, local consumers will be charged with the mission of shopping and dining in at least eight downtown establishments. Participants pick up a punch card at and receive a sticker for each purchase they make at a participating downtown location. No minimum purchase amount is required.
When the card has eight stickers, participants can take it to a drop box and be entered to win a $250 Downtown Frederick Gift Card, which is redeemable at more than 150 stores, restaurants, and salons.
For more information and a complete list of participating Get It Downtown merchants, where to pick up a punch card, and where to drop it off, visit www.downtownfrederick.org.
