Olney Dog Park expected to open in few weeks
Facility will be located at Olney Manor Park
The Olney Dog Park is set to open with a few weeks, welcoming dogs of all sizes and their owners.
The dog park is located in Olney Manor Park, 6601 Georgia Ave., near ball field No. 4 and across from the concession stand.
"Because of where the dog park is located, we are waiting for netting to be installed to protect the dogs and their owners from fly balls," county Park and Planning project manager Ellen Masciocchi said. "The netting will be attached to the end of existing ball field fencing. The poles are already in place and the netting should go up this week."
Other than the netting, Masciocchi said everything is just about completed. The 1-acre park will consist of kiosks on either end and three fenced areas.
"There will be one area for small dogs, one area for big dogs, and another area where we can rotate so we don't wear out all of the grass in one place," Masciocchi said.
A grand-opening event will be held, but probably not until the spring, she said.
The Cabin John Dog Park opened last month and is the fourth official dog park in the Montgomery County park system. Dog parks are also available at Black Hill Regional Park, Ridge Road Recreational Park and Wheaton Regional Park.
The cities of Gaithersburg and Rockville also offer dog parks.
Unlike the other county dog parks, the Olney Dog Park is being funded by the State Highway Administration as an Intercounty Connector mitigation project.
Masciocchi said the cost of the project is $135,000.
