Help offered for homeowners
In an effort to help stabilize Gaithersburg's home ownership base, the city campaigned this month to make homeowners aware of an extension of an application deadline for the Maryland Homeowners' Property Tax Credit and the Gaithersburg supplemental property tax credit program.
A resident suggested the push, said City Manager Angel L. Jones.
The homeowners' property tax credit program is a state program that allows credits against the homeowner's property tax bill if the property taxes exceed a fixed percentage of the homeowner's income.
"In other words, it sets a limit on the amount of property taxes any homeowner must pay based upon his or her income, said Jones. "Gaithersburg supplements the state credit with an additional municipal credit
Deadline for eligible homeowners to apply, typically Sept. 1, has been extended through Monday.
