Prep football roundup: Flowers-Roosevelt showdown moved to Monday
Oxon Hill, Wise, Suitland, Douglass, Gwynn Park among winners in Saturday action
The game matches the last two undefeated teams in Prince George's County this season. The Jaguars and Raiders both are 7-0, and the winner likely will end up with the No. 1 seed in the 4A South Region playoffs. The postponement means that Flowers will have one fewer day to prepare for next week's game against two-time defending 4A South Region champion Suitland. The Rams improved to 7-1 on Saturday with a 34-14 win against Laurel. Suitland is set to visit Flowers next Saturday

Oxon Hill 40, Bowie 6
Showing no signs of distraction a little more than a week after the resignation of its head coach, the Oxon Hill routed Bowie on Saturday afternoon.
In its second game under interim coach Walter Cross after Kevin Wolfolk resigned on Oct. 15, Oxon Hill got four touchdowns on the ground, one in the air and another on a kickoff return.
The Clippers improved to 5-3 and slightly widened their lead over DuVal and Henry A. Wise in the race for the fourth and final 4A South Region playoff spot. Bowie dropped to 3-5.
Oxon Hill, DuVal and Wise all are 5-3, but when the new playoff points standings are calculated this coming week, Oxon Hill will get a small boost from the three bonus points its receives by virtue of Bowie's three wins this season. DuVal and Wise beat winless teams High Point and Parkdale, respectively, this weekend. In the state's playoff points standings, teams receive 8 points for each win against a Class 4A opponent and 1 bonus point for each win by a defeated opponent.
Leo Gordon had 14 carries for 124 yards and two touchdowns and Tyree Butler added 12 carries for 100 yards and another TD for Oxon Hill in its win against Bowie. Quarterback Michael Wilson also had a touchdown run, and he completed 7 of 19 passes for 119 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown pass to Jason Howard. Malik Cross returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the second straight week, and he had three catches for 42 yards.
Denzel Prince had 10 tackles to lead an Oxon Hill defense that yielded only a third-quarter touchdown. Jether Bond had eight tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Greg Roberson also had a fumble recovery and Bryan Lane added an interception.
Wise 35, Parkdale 6
The county's leading rusher, Wise's Anthony Wright, carried 22 times for 161 yards and three touchdowns as the Pumas improved to 5-3.
Quarterback Deandre Smith completed 3 of 4 passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns, both of which went to Trevon Butler, whose two catches covered 57 yards. Derron Tapp had seven carries for 34 yards. Tapp and Lumbus Burrell each scored two-point conversions.
Corey Daby led the Wise defense with eight tackles, including one for a loss, and two interceptions, as the Pumas sent Parkdale to its eight loss in as many games this fall.
With his performance Saturday, Wright surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season. Through eight games, he has 1,051 yards and 14 touchdowns on 154 carries.
Parkdale moved the ball effectively, virtually matching Wise in yardage. The Pumas outgained the Panthers, 279-270. Parkdale quarterback Nate Retta completed 13 of 30 passes for 150 yards, but was intercepted three times. The Panthers had difficulty getting anything going on the ground, as Retta and Jeff Sallis each totaled just seven yards rushing. Reggie Uwandi gave Parkdale its only score of the game when he returned a second-quarter kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Uwandi also had three catches for 77 yards. Ademola Olatunji led the Parkdale defense with 10 tackles, while Andre McKoy added five tackles and three sacks

Suitland 34, Laurel 14
Suitland improved to 7-1, breaking the game open with a key play just before halftime. Five different Rams scored touchdowns, including Malcolm Ball, who returned a blocked punt 35 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter to put Suitland ahead, 20-6.
Anthony Bush led Suitland's rushing attack with 92 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Levern Jacobs, Simon James and Dontrewell Kelley also scored touchdowns for the Rams. Laurel (2-6) got touchdown runs from DeAnte Love and Zane Carroll.
"I really don't believe in moral victories, but we played really well against a very good team," said Laurel first-year coach Brian Moore. "We were down 8-6 in the second quarter and then they got two touchdowns right before halftime and that kind of changed the momentum. We scored on our first possession of the second half, but they came right back and scored. I thought our kids played tough the whole game."
County 3A/2A/1A League
Douglass 42, Fairmont Heights
0
The Eagles bounced back from a narrow non-league loss at Fort Hill last week by dominating winless Fairmont Heights.
Douglass tailback Marcus Alexander had a huge afternoon, scoring four touchdowns, as Douglass improved to 6-2, setting up a pivotal County 3A/2A/1A League contest against Potomac next week. The Wolverines moved to 5-3 with their win against Crossland on Saturday and are a longshot to make the 3A South Region playoffs. But Douglass still has a shot at a 2A South playoff berth and would take a big step toward punching a ticket to the postseason it it can beat Potomac.
The Eagles began Saturday's win against Fairmont Heights with 22 points in the first quarter and never looked back as quarterback Richard Barber threw for two touchdowns and ran for another.
Eagles' tailback Jesse Robertson had a four-yard touchdown run in the romp while Alexander caught two touchdown passes and returned a kickoff 80-yards for a touchdown.
Gwynn Park 30, Surrattsville 6
Coming off a non-league loss last week at Urbana, the Yellow Jackets broke open a relatively close game with two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Khalek Shepherd ran for his second touchdown of the game in the fourth period, and the Yellow Jackets later got a touchdown run from quarterback Lavaughn Hughes.
Mike Fourth opened the scoring with a seven-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and Shepherd got his first TD on a one-yard run in the second quarter. Andre Williams scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter for Surrattsville, but the Hornets still trailed 16-6 after the two-point conversion attempt failed.
Shepherd carried 11 times for 87 yards. Fourth added 76 yards on four carries and Nigee Carmichael carried four times for 62 yards. Hughes completed 7 of 12 passes for 94 yards, including a long of 51 yards to Aaron Lewis.
“I wasn't impressed at all with this performance,” said Gwynn Park coach Danny Hayes. “There are still some things we need to do to get everything right, as far as getting people playing time and dealing with injuries.”
Private schools
DeMatha 41, O'Connell 0
The Stags' answer to a rain-soaked afternoon was to keep the ball on the ground. Quarterback Tom Chroniger failed to complete either of his two passing attempts. But he was otherwise occupied for much of the game, as he carried 15 times for 147 yards and two touchdowns.
Marcus Coker added eight carries for 72 yards and also reached the end zone twice. Delonte Morton and Donte Washington also had touchdown runs.
The DeMatha defense held O'Connell to less than 100 yards of total offense, as the Stags benefited from six O'Connell turnovers. Pat Harbeson had an interception and Raheem Cardwell, Patrick Goulden, Ike Nnawuba, Bobby Caffes and Kyrell Latimer each had fumble recovers.
“We did a great job running the ball,” said Stags' coach Bill McGregor. “I was surprised that we dominated them from the time we walked on the field until the time we walked off. O'Connell has a good football team, but we totally controlled the game. The last two weeks we've been healthy and able to play with everybody. We're pleased with how we've performed.”
Friendship Collegiate 14, Riverdale Baptist 12
After jumping to a 12-0 halftime lead, Riverdale Baptist saw its three-game win streak come to an end when the Crusaders yielded two second half touchdowns.
Riverdale Baptist (4-3) scored first on a one-yard run from Keith Hawkins but missed the extra point attempt. The Crusaders went ahead 12-0 in the second quarter when Gabe Johnson connected with Alex Fletcher on an 11-yard scoring toss. But Friendship Collegiate answered with a touchdown in the third quarter and took the lead when Chris Griggs tossed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Gadsen with four minutes left in the fourth quarter.
“With a lot of our linemen playing both ways, the holes that we opened in the first half just weren’t there in the second half,” said Riverdale Baptist coach Bob Shields. “They have a huge team and we were missing three starters. I’m encouraged by the progress that the program has shown. We’re definitely heading in the right direction and you’re talking about a school with maybe 100 high school-aged boys to draw from.”
Riverdale Baptist will travel to Gallaudet University in the District to face Hyde Academy next Saturday night. The Crusaders will then prepare for the National Association of Christian Athletes national tournament in Dayton, Tenn., Nov. 4-7.
