Crossland coach released from hospital after seizure
Knight heads home Friday night after tests, plans to coach vs. Potomac Saturday
Crossland High School football coach and athletic director Eric Knight was hospitalized for a few hours on Friday evening after suffering an apparent seizure at about 5:30 p.m. during a soccer game at the Temple Hills school.
Knight was taken to Southern Maryland Hospital for tests and was released shortly before 9 p.m., said Potomac High School assistant football coach Ronnie Crump, a member of Knight's coaching staff for nine of the 15 years that Knight spent at Potomac. Knight left Potomac at the end of the 2007-08 school year and took over at Crossland.
Crump said rumors that Knight suffered a heart attack were inaccurate, and said he spoke with Knight by phone at 7:30 p.m. and then went to see him at the hospital.
"At first I heard it was a heart attack, and I called his cell phone and his wife [Gayle] answered and handed him the phone," Crump said, adding that about 20 Crossland players also gathered at the hospital. "He's dealt with it and he's fine and he's going home to rest."
According to Crump, Knight said he planned to be on the sidelines for Saturday's game against his former school. Potomac will visit Crossland at 2 p.m.
"It's awkward coaching against him, but we're all going to be there tomorrow," Crump said Friday night.
Knight, who underwent a liver transplant on May 11, 2008, was not available for comment. Knight is in his 25th season as a head football coach in Prince George's County. Prior to his stint at Potomac, Knight coached at Forestville. His career record is 180-90.
