Rams close in on postseason with win over Kennedy; Gaithersburg defeats Magruder
Crusoe Gongbay was at it again.
The county's leading rusher ran for 216 yards and scored five touchdowns four on the ground in addition to a 96-yard kickoff return as Rockville all but locked up a Class 2A West Region playoff berth with a 50-18 victory over Kennedy.
"It was close; 21-15 at halftime," said Rams head coach Kevin Bernot. "They came out and had us on the ropes for a couple minutes. But we made some adjustments and just turned it on."
Gongbay now has 1,201 yards rushing, with 17 touchdowns on the ground and two via kickoff returns, despite missing almost two full games with an ankle injury.
Rockville (7-1 overall) quarterback Chris Brown only completed one pass on the night, but it went for a 25-yard touchdown to tight end Nick Thomas. Fullback Josue Gaitan added an 80-yard scoring run.
Senior Bizi Ezekoye managed several long runs for the Cavaliers (2-6, 2-4 Montgomery 3A Division).
Gaithersburg 20, Magruder 14
Quarterback Zack Fetters accounted for all three of his team's touchdowns as the Trojans (3-5, 2-2 4A West) kept their hopes of a .500 season alive.
Fetters (7 of 18, 156 yards) hit Sean Combs on a 50-yard scoring strike in the first quarter, the only points in the first half, and Tyler Lardy from 56-yards out in the fourth quarter for what turned out to be the winning points. In between, he scored a 6-yard touchdown on the ground.
Griffin Eldridge and Chris Williams hooked up for a 24-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to get Magruder (3-5, 2-2 4A East) within 20-14, and the Colonels then recovered an onside kick, but Gaithersburg was able to close it out.
Wheaton 30, Richard Montgomery 8
The Knights (3-5) rushed for over 300 yards and scored 22 unanswered points in the first quarte of a decisive win. Running back Ricardo McLeod and quarterback Rayshawn Taylor got it rolling with back-to-back 63-yard touchdown runs. The two combined for every Wheaton point: McLeod rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown with an additional 2-point conversion, while Taylor added 129 on the ground with three touchdowns and two 2-pointers.
Mac Juniorson added 49 yards on five carries.
Damascus 41, Northwood 6
After a slow start, the Swarmin' Hornets (6-2, 3-2 3A) totaled 35 points in the second and third quarters to pull away from the visiting Gladiators (1-7, 1-5) to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Tailback Brian Lucas continued his recent success on the ground, rushing for 143 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 13 carries, while quarterback Connor Frazier completed 7 of 12 passes for 128 yards and a score to Greg Stanton. Frazier also scored a touchdown on the ground.
Northwood quarterback Jimmy Hessler completed 13 of 29 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown. He also threw a pair of interceptions, giving him 20 for the season.
Bethesda-Chevy Chase 21, Watkins Mill 14
Trailing 14-0 in the second quarter, the Barons scored 21 unanswered points, including a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, to capture their third win of the season.
Chuck Banks scored both fourth-quarter touchdowns on runs of 15 and 4 yards and finished with 195 yards on 22 carries. Quarterback Casey Fitzgerald added 96 rushing yards and passed for a touchdown in the second quarter for B-CC (3-5, 1-3 4A West).
Darnell Henson tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Daniel Upson, covering 27 and 17 yards, for the Wolverines (1-7, 0-5 3A).
St. Albans 49, Bullis 7
The Bulldogs (2-5) allowed 42 first-half points and their second Interstate Athletic Conference game in as many tries this season.
Potomac School 32, Poolesville 0
Poolesville's offensive woes continued with a shutout at the hands of their Virginia opponenets. The Falcons only mustered 127 yards of offense while allowing 367. The versatile Ben Hessels paced their attack with six touches for 30 yards.
Central Virginia Home School 37, Avalon 12<P> The Black Knights are still looking for their first conference win despite 121 passing yards from Steven Funk and 85 on the ground from David Collins. Collins put Avalon on the board with a 5-yard scoring run in the first quarter, and Daniel Kline returned a fumble 32 yards for a touchdown in the second half.
