Churchill rules county tennis
Top singles title up for grabs on Monday after Friday match postponed due to rain, darkness
The No. 1 singles title at this year's county tennis tournament is still up for grabs.
The top two seeds, Anna Rozenberg of Bethesda-Chevy Chase and Lauren Pinsky of Churchill, respectively, were locked at one set apiece Friday at Walter Johnson when the match was postponed due to rain and darkness. The two will pick up where they left off Monday at 3 p.m. at Richard Montgomery.
But Churchill has already clinched its second straight team title with the advantage over second-place Whitman. B-CC will finish in third place.
The Bulldogs put themselves in an advantageous position by reaching the finals in all seven brackets for just the second time in the program's history.
Churchill came up big in the doubles competition Friday, winning two of the three matches. Maggie Yinn and Joanne Liu upended top-seeded Maggie Ingersoll and Haley Johnson in straight sets for the No. 1 doubles title and Jill Teitelbaum and Tanya Begheri won at No. 2 doubles. Whitman's Hannah Stahl and Rachel Sisco took the third doubles title.
B-CC junior Taylor Newman defeated last year's No. 3 singles winner, Robyn Baird (Churchill), in straight sets for the No. 2 singles title. Whitman's Christina Davis won at No. 3 singles and Vikings senior No. 4 Julia Chandler successfully defended last year's title with a three-set win over Ashley Lin.
The first round of the all-Montgomery County Region II tournament will also be played Monday at Richard Montgomery at 3 p.m. Both Rozenberg and Pinsky are in the girls singles draw but received first-round byes.
Whitman junior No. 1 singles player Sarah Macy and sophomore No. 2 Nicky Gottret top the girls doubles draw.
The winner and finalist in each draw at regionals earns a bid to the state tournament next spring.
