Queen Anne girls enjoying solid season
This week was supposed to provide a measuring stick for the Queen Anne School girls' soccer team. Athletic Director Dave Montgomery recently added games for this week against District programs Field School and Edmund Burke in hopes of further challenging his team.
Field School handed the Lady Lions their first loss of the season on Tuesday, 7-0. Edmund Burke lost at Grace Brethren in Clinton on Tuesday and played that game shorthanded with 10 players. Montgomery said Thursday morning that three more Burke players were injured in the Grace Brethren game, leaving Burke with just seven available players for its game against Queen Anne. The contest was canceled. With Queen Anne at 7-0-1 this year, its successful season has Montgomery thinking about placing the team back into the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference next year.
Queen Anne participates in a PVAC league schedule in cross country, track and field and boys' and girls' basketball, but its girls' and boys' soccer, baseball, softball and volleyball programs all play independent schedules. Montgomery said he may try moving the girls' soccer and volleyball teams into the PVAC next year. The last time the girls' soccer team competed in the PVAC was three years ago, Montgomery said.
"It would be nice to be a part of that again," said Montgomery. "I wouldn't have to be calling up to 30 schools to schedule games. It would be nice to have some sort of structure with a set schedule and to be able to work toward playoffs."
The girls' soccer team plays other PVAC teams, but cannot participate in postseason play or earn all-conference honors.
On the field, Queen Anne has four one-goal wins, including an overtime victory against Riverdale Baptist. Another game with the Crusaders ended in a 0-0 tie. Queen Anne also has shutout victories against Takoma in the season opener, 7-0, and against Lab School (D.C.), 4-0, on Sept. 22.
Senior Danielle Flynn, in her first season with the program, leads Queen Anne's offense with eight goals. Sophomore Jordan Deloach has five goals and her sister, senior Taylor Deloach, has four goals. Freshman Jasmine Johnson also has scored four goals, while sophomore Maya Jefferson and sisters Lola and Yinka Bode-George all have scored one goal. In net, sophomore Ashley Brown has posted three shutouts for second-year coach Betsy Fischer.
The Lions are scheduled to visit Montrose Christian at 4 p.m. Monday. Queen Anne won the first game between the teams on Sept. 24, 3-2. The Lions finish their season with a homecoming game at 1:45 p.m. Oct. 24 against Washington Waldorf from Bethesda.
