All Benjamin Hartmann wanted to do was design a T-shirt that would make people think about homelessness. Now, 100,000 shirts later, his wish came true.

Hartmann, a 10-year-old fifth-grader at Seven Locks Elementary School, was selected as the national winner of Fannie Mae's "Help the Homeless" T-shirt design contest, which charges elementary school students to design a shirt worn at the company's annual walkathon in November.

"It's a cause that needs to be helped," Hartmann, a Bethesda resident said. "It's kind of sad that people are homeless, but it's good we're doing something to help."

Hartmann's design featured a house with 15 different faces drawn around and the phrase "Everybody needs a Home" across the bottom.

The Help the Homeless walkathon takes place Nov. 22 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

For his effort, Hartmann won a savings bond and a rousing applause from his Seven Locks classmates at a presentation on Oct. 8.

"I felt really proud that I was picked and it was good to see all my classmates clapping for me," he said.

Walt Whitman to hold first golf classic

Walt Whitman High School will host its Golf Classic at 8:30 a.m., Oct. 23, at Whiskey Creek Golf Course in Frederick County.

The event, whose proceeds go to academic enhancement and faculty improvement, is in its first year.

The cost is $250 and includes breakfast, a round of golf, beverages, lunch, prizes, and a personal golf shoe and glove fitting by Footjoy and Titleist, respectively.

Breakfast, registration and practice time begins at 8:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.

Whiskey Creek Golf Course is located at 4804 Whiskey Court, Ijamsville.

Wootton High presents horrific play

The Thomas S. Wootton High School Center for the Arts will hold three performances of "Horror High" at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 23, 24, and 25, at the school, 2100 Wootton Parkway, Rockville.

The play, a thriller and send-up of teenage slasher films, follows students who may or may not be in the presence of a homicidal maniac.

Francophone festival? Oui, s'il vous plait!

Montgomery County Public Schools' annual Francophone Festival hits Richard Montgomery High School at 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Nov. 1. Richard Montgomery is located at 250 Richard Montgomery Drive, Rockville.

Walter Johnson High School will host an orientation and informational meeting for any parents of eighth grade students in the Walter Johnson cluster at 7 p.m., Oct. 22, at the school.

Speech on community service comes to Bethesda

Robert Goodwin, chairman of the business development firm RKG Enterprises, will host a lecture on volunteerism and community service at 7 p.m., Nov. 13, at the Washington Episcopal School in Bethesda, 5600 Little Falls Parkway, Bethesda. The event is free and open to the public.

Goodwin is also the past president and CEO of the Points of Light Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to engaging people to help solve social problems.

B-CC to hold IB meeting

Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School will host an information meeting about the school's International Baccalaureate program at 7 p.m., Oct. 28, in the school's auditorium, 4301 East-West Highway, Bethesda.
