Maria Peredo, owner of the Bolivian restaurant Kantutas, at 2462 Ennalls Ave., dishes out one of her country's typical "postres," or desserts, last week during lunch. Like many Hispanic restaurants in Wheaton, Peredo's mostly caters to Latinos. In an effort to expand her customer base, she says she makes English speakers feel welcome by explaining to them each item on the menu before they order. But that doesn't guarantee they'll walk through the door in the first place — a major challenge for local Hispanic restaurants in Wheaton, she says.
