Marcuccio leading in campaign funds
Councilwoman, Hoffmann have outpaced City Council candidates
Councilwoman Phyllis R. Marcuccio has raised $13,216 so far in her bid to unseat Mayor Susan R. Hoffmann, who raised $6,050 in the early months of her campaign.
The first finance reports for Rockville's November elections released Friday reveal the two mayoral candidates have raised far more money than the City Council candidates.
The mayor rolled over $6,582.63 from her previous campaigns and Marcuccio brought in $1,180.69 from previous years.
Neither candidate has used loans to supplement her coffers, but Marcuccio has more than double the number of donors to her campaign than Hoffmann.
Three council candidates have raised more than $3,000 incumbent Piotr Gajewski, Bridget Newton and Mark Pierzchala.
Carl Henn, Thomas Moore and Virginia Onley have raised more than $2,000 each; Trapper Martin has raised more than $1,000; and incumbent John Britton, Waleed Ovase and Max van Balgooy have raised less than $1,000 so far.
Newton has received the most in-kind contributions, totaling $1,049.07. The contributions have gone toward signs, T-shirts, a banner, a Web site and cake, she reported.
Moore and Onley also received in-kind donations, totaling $40 and $80, respectively.
Several prominent Rockville residents and politicians have donated to the campaigns.
Del. James Gilchrist (D-Dist. 17) of Rockville has contributed $50 to both Newton's and Onley's campaigns.
Barbara Duncan, wife of former county executive and Rockville mayor Douglas M. Duncan, also gave $100 to Newton.
Former mayor James Coyle, who is heading up Hoffmann's campaign, made a $50 donation to her coffers and $25 contributions to Moore's and Pierzchala's campaigns.
Gajewski received a $150 donation from former state's attorney and former judge of the Court of Special Appeals Andrew L. Sonner, as well as a $1,000 donation from Aris Mardirossian, a Montgomery County inventor, developer and businessman.
In addition to Gilchrist's donation, Onley has received $50 from Robert Dorsey, a former member of the City Council, and $20 from Gajewski.
Pierzchala received donations of $50 or less from former mayor Rose G. Krasnow, former mayor Steven Van Grack and his wife Susan, Coyle and his wife Lorine, and former councilman James Marrinan and his wife Cynthia.
Van Balgooy received a $25 donation from Hoffmann.
But the longest lists of prominent supporters were for Hoffmann and Marcuccio.
Former county executive Sidney Kramer donated $500 to Hoffmann, Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin gave $250, and Del. Sheila Hixson (D-Dist. 20) of Silver Spring, former councilmen John F. Hall Jr. and Marrinan gave $100 or less.
For Marcuccio, Councilwoman Anne M. Robbins and Planning Commissioner John Tyner donated $100 and $200, respectively. John Moser, head of the city's Cultural Arts Commission, contributed $150 and community activists Joseph Jordan, who is heading up Marcuccio's campaign, and Alice Liu and Thomas Curtis donated $100 or less.
The final pre-election fundraising report is due Oct. 29.
