Forestville chess academy hosts tournamentChess enthusiasts from across Prince George’s County were winners at the Forestville-based Eagle Chess Academy’s second tournament. The event, held Sept. 8 at D’ Light Skate N Palace in Temple Hills, produced a five-way tie in the final round. However, a few rounds of speed chess were used to determine the tournament winners. The first-place finisher, Sharif Usenov of Gaithersburg, took home a $300 prize. Talisa Jackson of Bowie in second place won $200 and Charles Yang of Gaithersburg earned $100 for third place. Five additional winners from Prince George’s County earned free entry to the next tournament. They included: Ronald Best, Derrick Carter, James Fabunmi, Gabriel Vilarrubi and Anthony Walker. Eagle Chess Academy is a nonprofit organization that hosts monthly non-United States Chess Federation chess tournaments. Instructor Ted Fagan founded Eagle Chess Academy four years ago to provide scholastically based chess learning programs in a supportive, relaxed environment. Resident promoted tocoordinator position Upper Marlboro resident Carolyn Moberly has advanced to the position of coordinator as an independent distributor for Market America, an Internet marketing company. Moberly became eligible for the coordinator level after developing two sales and distribution organizations in addition to selling a specific amount of products. Moberly will be recognized in Market America’s monthly PowerLine magazine. Scholarship Programsemifinalists named Two students from Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville were named semifinalists in the 44th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program. The program announced Harolyn A. Phillips and Brandon E. Pierce were among more than 1,600 black high school seniors chosen. They now can continue in the competition for approximately 800 scholarships worth over $2.5 million to be awarded next spring. More than 140,000 high school juniors from across the nation requested consideration in the 2008 National Achievement Program when they took the 2006 Preliminary SAT⁄National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. To reach the competition’s Finalist level, semifinalists must present a record of high academic performance in high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal and earn SAT scores that confirm the PSAT⁄NMSQT performance. Also, the semifinalist and a school official must complete a scholarship application in which they provide information about the student’s participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities and educational goals.
